    H.S. baseball: Montville seeded No. 1 for ECC tournament

    Montville High School has earned the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Eastern Connecticut Conference baseball tournament, which begins on Wednesday at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

    The Indians (18-2), ranked No. 2 in the latest New Haven Register state poll, will play No. 8 St. Bernard in the quarterfinals at 1:45 p.m. Montville won the Medium Division while the Saints (9-11) shared the Small title with Lyman Memorial.

    Waterford (17-2), the two-time defending tournament champion, is the No. 2 seed and will play in Wedneday's first game at 11 a.m. against No. 7 Lyman. The other two quarterfinal matchups have No. 4 East Lyme against No. 5 Fitch at 4:30 p.m. and No. 3 Norwich Free Academy, the ECC Large winner, against No. 6 Windham at 7:15.

    Semifinal games will be played on Thursday at 4 and 7 p.m., and the championship game is set for Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m.

    There is one admission price for each day: $6 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.

    In other baseball news:

    • Tom McDonald's bases clearing triple broke the game open in the fifth inning as Montville downed RHAM, 7-3. The score was tied at 3 when McDonald hit his three run triple for the Indians, who tied a program record for most regular season wins (18). Also, Buddy Dewaine pitched a six-hitter with nine strikeouts and one earned run, Quentin Duperry had two hits, a run and an RBI, Jeremy Sagun had two hits and an RBI, and TT Bowens had two hits and scored.

    • Bryan Caisse had a bases-clearing triple to highlight a big offensive day as Norwich Free Academy finished its regular season with a 13-6 nonleague road victory over Middletown. Joey DiPietro was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats (17-3), who won the ECC Large Division title a day earlier, while Will Trask had three hits and Tannor Fontaine and Cam Milton each drove in three runs.

    • Three Fitch pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Falcons finished the regular season with a 3-0 victory over Bacon Academy in the ECC Large Division. Fitch (13-7, 6-4) actually picked up two wins on the day, accepting a forfeit win over Putnam, which opted not to reschedule an earlier game. Dan Mewah, Ian Cekala and Hunter Nadeau combined to earn the win for Fitch (Mewah was credited with the win) while Kendrick Boss had two doubles and an RBI and Cooper Robinson had a single, RBI triple and a run.

    • Chase Hackett threw a complete-game four-hitter as Old Lyme finished its regular season with a 3-0 victory over Hale-Ray in the Shoreline Conference. Hacketted walked two and struck out seven for the Wildcats, who will take a 13-7 record into the postseason. Hunter Sheffield had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs for Old Lyme while Ross Golebiewski had two hits, including a double, and a pair of RBI.

    • Bryan Cespedes snapped a 1-all tie with a bases clearing double in the fourth inning as New London beat Norwich Tech, 5-3. Josh Vincent hit a solo home run in the sixth inning for New London (10-10). Bryce Bedard went 2-for-2, including a double, and scored for the Warriors (13-7) and Cal Senesac went 2-for-3.

    • Justin Keating drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give fourth-ranked Waterford a 3-2 nonleague victory over St. Bernard on Thursday night. Keating finished 3-for-4 with a triple and run scored while Will Sherman was 2-for-3 with a run for the Lancers, who conclude their regular season with a game against North Kingstown (R.I.) on Monday at noon at Dodd Stadium. Justin Pandolfe (4-0) was the winning pitcher while Aaron Michaud and Danny Terracciano had two hits apiece for the Saints.

    • Ethan Murphy went 2-for-4, including an RBI double, in Stonington's season-ending 10-5 loss to Windham on Thursday night. Ben Dallacono and Amadi White also had doubles for the Bears, who finish 6-14.
