Groton invites participants to march in annual July 4th parade

The Groton Parks and Recreation Department is still taking registrations for groups to march in the annual Groton 4th of July Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 4.

The parade starts at Poquonnock Plains Park and travels north on U.S. Route 1 toward the Groton Shopping Plaza. This year’s theme is “The American Dream.” Registration for groups with floats and marchers is free.

Amby Burfoot, a local running legend, Olympian, author, and Boston Marathon champion, will serve as Grand Marshal.

“After working and living in Pennsylvania for 30 years, it's great to celebrate the anniversary of my return to Groton by being Grand Marshal in the July 4th parade,” Burfoot said in a statement. “July 4th is also my wedding anniversary, so this year will be doubly meaningful.”

Last year’s parade was canceled due to weather.

“The community was very disappointed that we had to cancel last year,” said Jerry Lokken, manager of Recreation Services. “We are looking forward to putting on another great parade this year.”

Participating groups include floats, marchers, fire departments and antique vehicles.

To register, contact Lokken at (860) 536-5682. For parade route and other information, visit GrotonRec.com or contact Groton Parks and Recreation at (860) 536-5680.
