    Local roundup: Tigers make it three straight by sweeping ValleyCats

    Norwich — Right fielder Joey Havrilak threw out the tying run at the plate to end the game and the Connecticut Tigers won their third straight, completing a series sweep over the Tri-City ValleyCats with a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.

    With runners on first and second and two outs, Bobby Wernes singled to right for Tri-City and pinch runner Keach Ballard was waved home from second. Havrilak threw a one-hop strike to the plate to preserve the save for closer Jordan Smith.

    Sandy Baez pitched five innings for Connecticut (5-6), allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts, to earn the victory.

    Down 1-0, Connecticut tied the game in the bottom of the third. Second baseman Pat Mackenzie led off with a triple, his second in two days, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Josh Lester. Lester then began the game-winning rally in the fifth with a two-out double and Christin Stewart followed with a bloop double between a trio of defenders for a 2-1 edge.

    Drew Smith added three shutout innings in relief for the Tigers.

    NECBL

    • The Mystic Schooners rallied from an early 2-1 deficit to defeat Laconia Muskrats 4-2 for their third straight win in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. RBI singles by Derek Jenkins and Nick Mascelli in the fifth put the Schooners (13-6) up for good 3-2 before Jenkins added an RBI single in the seventh. Starter Mike Concato earned the win while Stonington's Doug Domnarski retired all five batters he faced and Ryan Thomas struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save. 

    Zone VI Senior League

    • Troy Stefanski went 2-for-3 and scored a run during Ledyard/Pawcatuck's 6-3 loss to Willimantic. Ryan Francis and Mike Dellaporta also drove in runs for Ledyard/Pawcatuck.

    District 10 LL softball (11-12)

    • Waterford advanced to the championship series with a 4-0 win over Groton/Mystic in the semfinals. Waterford will play the winner of a late game between East Lyme and Montville in a best-of-three series beginning today at Veterans Field in Niantic. Rachel Miller pitched a three-hitter for Waterford while Taylor Lee, Madison Nott and Molly Quiles each had a hit. Karly Morales had two hits for Groton/Mystic.

    • East Lyme defeated Ledyard 5-0 in the final game of pool play on Monday night. Angie Venditti pitched a no-hitter while Isabel Casey and Olivia Quagan each had two hits and Lydia Swan scored two runs. Sara Rivers struck out nine for Ledyard.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (13)

    • East Lyme advanced to the championship round with a 10-2 victory over Waterford. Galen Donovan allowed only three hits over six innings and also contributed three hits with three runs scored for East Lyme, which plays unbeaten Ledyard in the final today at 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Field in Niantic. Spencer Winakor added a two-run double and Tristan Smith two RBI for East Lyme while Junior McBride had a double for Waterford.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (15)

    • Scott Dunbar pitched three innings of one-hit relief as Tri-County came from behind to beat Pawcatuck 9-5 in the losers' bracket. Trailing 5-1, Tri-County scored four runs in the fourth inning to tie it. Chris Von Heel and Brian Clemens each had two hits for Tri-County. Ethan Murphy had a pair of doubles and two runs scored for Pawcatuck, Rhys Hammond and Robbie Petriel also had two hits each and Tyler Stafford and Aiden Cameron added RBI.

    SEC Babe Ruth (16-18)

    • Dylan Konakowitz pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as Waterford defeated East Lyme 11-1 in a Southeastern Connecticut Babe Ruth 16-18 game on Monday night. Sam Strout had two hits with three RBI for Waterford (2-0) while Cody Cleary doubled in two runs and Tommie Feliciano added a double. Haden Swanson had a double for East Lyme (0-3).

    College honors

    • Trinity's Nicholas Bellas of Old Lyme, a member of the men's track team, was named the school's Bob Harron Junior Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Bellas, who competes in the 200- and 400-meter events, was also named to the NESCAC Winter and Spring All-Academic Teams. He is the son of  Kathryn and David Bellas.

    • The Coast Guard Academy men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The women's team had a combined GPA of 3.29, the highest in team history, in the Spring semester while the men's team had a 3.01 total GPA during the semester.

    The Connecticut College men's and women's swimming and diving teams also honored for their excellence in the classroom by the CSCAA with the Team Scholar All-America Award. The women's team had a 3.66 GPA during the spring semester while the men had a 3.29 GPA. It marked the 26th consecutive semester that both swimming teams earned the award.

    • The Conn College women's water polo team has been honored by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) for its academic excellence. The Camels had GPA of 3.55, No. 1 among reporting teams.

    In addition, 11 players were honored for their athletic and academic performance on the CWPA women's varsity scholar athlete team: Kelsey Millward and Sarah Pursley (Outstanding performers with GPA of 3.71-4.0); junior Abbey Wrobleski, Ashley Amey, Brianna Harrity, Kate Jacobson, Shannon Cry, Sophia Soriano and Susan Doetsch (Superior performers with GPA of 3.41-3.7); Isabelle Baneux  and Sarah Sovia (Excellent performers with GPA of 3.2-3.4).
