    Local roundup: Providence's Kris Dunn named Blue Ribbon Preseason All-American

    Providence — Providence College junior guard Kris Dunn of New London was named to the 2015-16 Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook Preseason All-America Team, it was announced Thursday.

    Dunn joined Kentucky freshman Skal Labissiere, Louisiana State freshman Ben Simmons, Virginia senior Malcolm Brogdon and Iowa State senior Georges Niang on the team. 

    Dunn, who recorded the second highest single-season assist mark in Providence history with 247, earned a number of honors last season, including Big East Player of the Year, Big East Defensive Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America, USBWA All-District 1 First Team and NABC District 5 First Team honors.

    Dunn led the league in assists (7.5) and steals (2.7). He ranked third in nation in assists per game and fifth in the country in steals per game. He also averaged 15.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He tied for the team lead with seven double-doubles and on Jan. 29, Dunn became the 14th player in Big East history to register a triple-double in a league game with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists versus DePaul.

    The Friars, who finished last season with a 22-12 mark and made their second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, will open the 2015-16 season on Saturday, Nov. 14 versus Harvard at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

    Tigers win in 12

    • Corey Baptist's two-run double with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Connecticut Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Lowell Spinners in a New York-Penn League game played before 1,850 fans at Dodd Stadium. Baptist's shot scored Jose Zambrano and Will Allen, both of whom reached on singles. Lowell took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 12th before the Tigers (30-31) came back to win it. Zambrano, Allen and Baptist each had two hits for the Tigers and Andres Tejada pitched two innings of relief for the win. The Spinners are 33-32.

    Women's soccer

    • A late second-half goal from junior Stephanie Ribeiro led the UConn women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win at Georgetown on Thursday. Georgetown took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Grace Damaska in the 52nd minute, but five minutes later Rachel Hill tied things for UConn (2-0), running the ball in deep to the goal and scoring her third goal of the season. Ribeiro scored in the 71st minute on a cross from Andrea Plucenik.
