Old Lyme — Two people died Saturday after a car they were in crashed into a bridge abutment on Mile Creek Road.

Norman Emerson, 90, of South Lyme, was driving east near the near the intersection of Bailey Road just after 10 p.m. Saturday when he failed to negotiate the narrowing of the roadway under a railroad bridge and crashed, according to State Police Trooper Matthew Warren.

Both Emerson and a passenger, Janice Brentlinger, 87, of Niantic, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, Warren said.

The car, a 2014 Chevrolet Captiva, struck the bridge abutment head on and sustained heavy damage, police said.
