World Fish Migration Day events planned

Two local events will take place May 21 in recognition of World Fish Migration Day.

At the Latimer Brook Fishway in East Lyme, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will offer an open house from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Visitors will learn how the steep-pass fishway allows alewife and sea-run trout to pass, and how it includes a trap and electronic fish counter.

DEEP staff will be on hand to explain how the fishway works and the sea-run trout program.

The fishway is located at 100 Boston Post Road. The fishway is about a quarter of a mile east of the intersection of routes 161 and 1.

Also on May 21 will be a family-friendly Connecticut River flotilla at the Smith Neck Road state boat launch in Old Lyme.

The paddle begins at 9 a.m. Restoration specialists, including engineers and DEEP biologists, will be among the group.

The event is sponsored by Princeton Hydro, the Connecticut River Watershed Council, and other conservation groups.

Those who plan to attend should send an email to Laura Wildman at lwildman@princetonhydro.com with the title “WFMD Floatilla” in the subject line, and include how many people will be attending.
