    Local roundup: Waterford wins Legion tourney opener on Bakken's no-hitter

    Waterford — Collin Bakken pitched a no-hitter as Waterford opened play in the state American Legion baseball Northern Sectional tournament with a 1-0 win over Manchester on Saturday.

    No. 10 Waterford visits No. 7 West Hartford in the second round on Sunday at Hall High School at 1 p.m.

    Bakken struck out eight with no walks, throwing 64 of his 89 pitches for strikes. Bakken also scored the game's only run, coming home on a Mike Rocchetti single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Waterford had four hits, with Kevin Johnson, Walker Sutman and Brent Conderino also singling.

    • Gabriel Cortorreal scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as No. 6 New London beat No. 19 Norwich 1-0. New London hosts No. 14 Enfield Sunday at noon. The winner advances to the best-of-three regionals at No. 3 Niantic, beginning on Wednesday.

    Quantique White pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk for the win and Timmie Jackson had two hits for New London. Robert Thornburn pitched a four-hitter for Norwich, striking out nine with four walks.

    NECBL

    • The Newport Gulls took a 10-0 lead and held on to beat the Mystic Schooners 12-9 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Richard Slenker (Yale) was 3-for-5 with a two-run double, Martin Figueroa (Rhode Island) had two hits and scored twice and Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) had a two-run single for the Schooners (18-12). 

    District 10 LL softball (9-10)

    • Waterford evened the best-of-three series with a 7-1 win over Groton/Mystic.  The deciding game is at East Lyme Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Marina Colonis (double) and Sam SanJuan had two hits each for Waterford and Anna Dziecinny was the winning pitcher and struck out eight. Angelica Tompkins and Sydney Lyons had two hits each for Groton/Mystic.

    State Junior League softball (13-14)

    • Hannah Smith pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Ledyard beat New Canaan 19-1 in five innings on Friday night in the state tournament at Orange. Brooke Carrender had an inside-the-park grand slam and scored two runs, Makenzie Jones had four hits and scored twice and Smith had three hits, drove in two runs and scored three times for Ledyard.  

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Justin O'Leary pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as East Lyme Black beat Tri-County 11-1 on Friday. Bryan Carambot had a double and two singles, Brendan Luppurulo and Peyton Casey had two hits each and O'Leary doubled for East Lyme (2-7). Cam Brown singled and trippled for Tri-County (2-5).

    • Alec Donahue pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as Waterford Blue beat East Lyme Black 10-6 on Friday. Tom Feliciano (double), Ryan Miller and Tyler Howser had two hits and scored twice each, Griffin Beaney doubled and Miller drove in two runs for Waterford (6-3). Bryan Carambot hit a grand slam, Andrew Brown doubled and scored twice and Peyton Casey singled and doubled for East Lyme.

    Sutera tournament (11-12)

    • David Tompkins had four hits as Groton beat Waterford 13-6 on Friday. Luca Ursini and Isaiah Anderson had two hits each for Groton and Tompkins was the winning pitcher, striking out seven. Quinn Sylvia and Ayus Solanki had doubles for Waterford.

    Sutera tournament (9-10)

    • Nathan Virtue pitched four hitless innings, leading Groton to a 4-2 win over Waterford on Friday. Jack Ballou and Rey Hidalgo had a single and a double each for Groton and Jacob Beardsley doubled and drove in two runs for Waterford.

    College honors

    • Groton's Sam Watson, a former Fitch High School standout, was named the Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in men's swimming. Watson, who graduated from Mount Saint Mary college in May, won the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events at the Skyline Conference Championships. He earned all-conference honors in 11 events over his four-year career.
