    H.S. football / Week 3 matchups

    Friday

    Montville at Waterford, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Montville (1-1, 0-0 ECC Div. 2); Waterford (1-0, 0-0 ECC Div. II)

Last week: Montville lost to Plainfield 30-16; Waterford was idle.

Outlook: The winner of this game takes the early lead in the four-team ECC Division II. Montville lost a key member of its offense last week (Andrew Petherick) and must find new ways to score. Waterford, meanwhile, is riding the good vibes from its Week 1 win over Windham. The Lancers haven’t started a football season 2-0 in a while.

Bacon Academy at Ledyard, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Bacon (0-2); Ledyard (0-2)

Last week: Bacon lost to Windham 29-14; Ledyard lost to St. Joseph 50-12

Outlook: Ten months ago, this was a state Class M quarterfinal. Now? Two teams desperate for a win, having been outscored by a combined 162-38. Bacon returns four starters from last year’s team that beat both Ledyard and New London, moving receiver Paul Chasse to quarterback. Ledyard has played a pair of quality opponents thus far — Cranston East and St. Joseph. Could be the best game of the weekend, given the levels of desperation.

Killingly at New London, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Killingly (2-0); New London (2-0)

Last week: Killingly defeated Stonington 34-14; New London defeated Griswold 50-0

Outlook: Clearly, the ECC’s two best teams. Killingly uses quarterback Kyle Derosier and running back Spencer Lockwood in a powerful, ball-control scheme. New London leads the ECC with 97 points scored in two games, thanks to quarterback Melquann Gomez and considerable skill position talent. Can New London’s defense can withstand Killingly’s power and get off the field? Can Killingly match New London’s speed? Should be a very entertaining game.

Stonington at East Lyme, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Stonington (1-1); East Lyme (0-2)

Last week: Stonington lost to Killingly 34-14; East Lyme lost to Fitch 35-29

Outlook: East Lyme’s offense produced 29 points last week, thanks to quarterback Dylan Hatajik, who threw for 163 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown pass to Liam McCarthy, and ran for 88 more. The bad news: The defense has allowed 82 points in two games. Stonington managed 13 points in its opener and didn’t score until late last week against Killingly.

    Valley/OL at Morgan, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Valley/OL (2-0, 1-0 Pequot Sassacus South); Morgan (2-0, 1-0)

    Last week: Valley/OL defeated Old Saybrook-Westbrook 26-15; Morgan defeated Haddam-Killingworth 33-27

Outlook: The winner of this game assumes first place in the Pequot Sassacus South. Both teams used goal-line stands in the fourth quarter to win last week. The Warriors’ came with seven minutes left, while Morgan stuffed Haddam-Killingworth on fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line with a minute left.

    Fitch at NFA, 7 p.m.

    Records: Fitch (1-1, 1-0 ECC Div. 1); NFA (0-1, 0-0)

Last week: Fitch defeated East Lyme 35-29; NFA was idle

Outlook: NFA's home opener comes after a bye week and a disappointing loss to Xavier two weeks ago. Fitch, meanwhile, rediscovered itself last week, riding quarterback Tyler Nelli to a division victory over East Lyme. The Falcons made more mistakes than coach Mike Ellis would have liked last week, but might be catching NFA at a good time. The Wildcats join Griswold as the lone teams in the ECC without a single point this season.

    Saturday

Cheney Tech at Thames River, 11 a.m. (East Lyme High School)

Records: Cheney Tech (2-0); Thames River (1-1)

Last week: Cheney defeated Vinal Tech 43-16; Thames River lost to Capital/AF 50-14

Outlook: Cheney Tech is a contender in the Constitution State Conference and poses quite the task for the Crusaders in the home opener. Thames River played most of the game without starting quarterback Jared Neal, who was injured after completing just one pass and was held out the rest of the game.
