Local colleges: Ex-UConn men's hockey coach Bruce Marshall dead at 54

Bruce Marshall, who played hockey at UConn and later coached the Huskies into the Division I era, died Saturday morning. He was 54.

Marshall was entering his second season as the head coach at Division II Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H.

"The entire UConn hockey community is saddened by the passing of Coach Marshall," current UConn coach Mike Cavanaugh said in a statement released by university. "I knew Bruce for over 25 years and saw his passion for the game and coaching. He was a great mentor for many young men who came to Storrs and wore a UConn jersey. His passing is a loss for UConn and the entire hockey community.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Marshall family."

    As a player, he was a four-year letter winner and a co-captain in 1984-85.

He was named head coach at UConn in 1988 and coached the Huskies until 2013. His 399 wins are the most in program history. The Huskies produced seven All-Americans and 26 all-conference players during his tenure. He helped transition UConn into the Division I era in 1998-99, lead the Huskies to a 20-10-4 record.

Marshall leaves behind four children — Matthew, Mollie, Marisa and Marikate. Arrangements are pending.
