Cottrell Brewery introduces new brews at Saturday Oktoberfest

Did you know breweries can be legally closed if they don't celebrate Oktoberfest? That's why there's so many of them.

It's true. The Federal Bureau of Pleasant Hops and Barley Beverages has the power to shut you down if you're crafting beer and not celebrating the time-honored drinking tradition called Oktoberfest. (It's also true that the National Council of Teachers of English have the power to give a bold red F to breweries for misspelling "October.")

However, the most important thing to remember about all this is that Pawcatuck's Cottrell Brewing Company hosts its annual Oktoberfest Saturday. Yes, Cottrell's introducing a new, year-round fall beer called Jancember Fest, but they'll also trot out their Dreaded Pumpkin Porter as well as batch two of their Pawtucket Porter. You can also enjoy live music and try craft grilled cheese sandwiches from the Whey Station food truck.

Cottrell Oktoberfest, 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Cottrell Brewery, 100 Mechanic St., Pawcatuck; $15 includes drink tickets and free beer glass; (860) 599-8213.
