Local roundup: Waterford girls win ECC Div. II basketball title

Waterford — Waterford put the finishing touches on the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II girls' basketball championship Monday night with a 63-27 victory over Killingly.

It was the eighth straight victory for the Lancers, who finished the regular season 16-4 and won the division by a game over Bacon Academy.

"I always believed we had a chance," Waterford coach Mark Capasso said. "There were at least four very strong teams in our division — us, Bacon, Stonington and Woodstock. I felt it wasn't going to be easy, but we never though it was going to be impossible."

Waterford split its season series with Bacon, and got some help when Stonington also split with Bacon.

Kayla Jean-Pierre led the Lancers against Killingly with 14 points and nine rebounds while Mia Brennan added 10 points and seven assists and Lilly Stoddard finished with seven points and six rebounds.

"Hopefully we can keep the momentum going (into the postseason)," Capasso said. "From now on we'll be playing all good teams, but it was great to get the clincher out of the way ... it was a good feeling for the kids, especially on senior night."
