    Local roundup: Sun sign Danielle Adams to training camp contract

    Mohegan — Forward Danielle Adams, who helped lead Texas A&M to the 2011 NCAA title, was signed to a training camp contract by the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday.

    The  6-foot-1 Adams was drafted No. 20 overall in the 2011 WNBA Draft, earning all-rookie honors that season. She has career averages of 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds and is currently averaging 20.8 points and 8.8 rebounds for Bnot Maccabi Ramat GAn in Israel.

    "We are excited about the opportunity to bring Danielle Adams into camp to compete for a roster spot," Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said. "She has been a proven scorer during her time in the WNBA and consistently creates matchup advantages at the offensive end. She is currently playing well in Israel and is motivated for the opportunity to rejoin the league."

    Women's basketball

    • Third-seeded WPI outscored Coast Guard Academy 38-14 in the second to pull away for a 68-38 victory over the No. 6 Bears in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament. Gill Gerton, who battled foul trouble, scored 10 points to lead the Bears, who finish 11-15.

    H.S. football

    • Ledyard's Manny Deshields-Sanabria, an all-state running back in 2015 when he rushed for 1,689 yards and 19 touchdowns, will play college football at Division III Western Connecticut State University in Danbury this fall, athletic director Jim Buonocore announced.

    "Manny is a terrific representative of our athletic department and has been a pleasure to have in our building for the last four years," said Buonocore, who also coached Deshields-Sanabria during his breakout junior season. "He leaves our program as one of the top running backs in school history and one of our better all-around athletes. Manny is a terrific human being who will have great success at the next level."

    Boys' basketball

    • Cam Collins had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead eighth-seeded Montville to a 72-37 victory over No. 9 Tourtellotte in the first round of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II tournament. The Indians (6-14), who outscored Tourtellotte 39-10 in the second half, will play at No. 1 Plainfield in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 6 p.m.

    • No. 7 Killingly defeated No. 10 Wheeler 58-46 in the first round of the ECC Division II tournament. Michael Anderson scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the Lions, who finish 4-17, while Roger Watrous added 11 points and Ryan Dussault finished with 14 rebounds and six blocked shots.

    Girls' basketball

    • Williams School's season came to a close with a 52-46 loss to Providence Country Day in the SENE tournament semifinals. Williams, which lost to PCD 64-27 in a regular-season game on Tuesday, finishes the season at 6-9. Catherine Shannon led Williams with 26 points and teammate Katia Bourganos had 11 points.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Three local schools have qualified for the CIAC class championships, which will be held on Saturday at Pomperaug High School in Southbury. Norwich Free Academy is seeded sixth in the Class L meet, which starts at 9 a.m., with a 130.97 scoring average, while Old Lyme (second, 131.11) and Stonington (third, 127.43) have qualified in Class S, which begins at 5 p.m. The top qualifiers are Trumbull in Class LL (138.39), Hand in Class M (134.63) and Woodstock Academy in Class S (147.3).

    College honors

    • Connecticut College senior midfielder Pat Devlin was named a first team All-American by D3Soccer.com. Devlin, the New England Small College Athletic Conference player of the Year, was earlier a second team All-America pick by the National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association. Devlin scored 13 goals, including four game-winners, and added three assists for the Camels.
