The inaugural Piver Cup soccer tournament will be held over the next two Saturdays at Stonington High School.

The event, featuring the boys' and girls' teams from Stonington, Fitch, Westerly and Chariho (R.I.), will be played in honor of Joshua M. Piver, a 1996 Stonington graduate and soccer goalie who was tragically killed when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

Piver was living in Brooklyn and working as a pollution and energy credits trader for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 105th floor of the North Tower. He was only 23.

In Saturday's opening round, Fitch will play Westerly at 12:30 p.m. and Chariho will face Stonington at 3 in girls' action, followed by a boys' doubleheader featuring the same matchups: Fitch vs. Westerly at 5:30 and Chariho vs. Stonington at 8.

The consolation and championship matches will be played the following Saturday (Sept. 16) with the girls' consolation at 12:30 p.m., the boys' consolation at 3, the girls' final at 5:30 and the boys final at 8.

To commemorate the inaugural tournament, the Stonington boys' team has designed T-shirts that will be on sale for $20. A portion of the proceeds will be used to pay future tournament expenses, but most money raised will go to the Joshua Piver Scholarship, a yearly award presented to a Stonington senior why best exhibits the traits Piver possessed.
