Jethro Tull living in the present

    OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I'm remembering my old college pal Randall Young, who passed away last year. I won't suggest it's an eerie coincidence, but Randall would have enjoyed the fact that the retrospective "Ian Anderson Presents Jethro Tull" show takes place at Foxwoods Saturday on the one-year anniversary of his death.

Because Randall was by God devoted to this great band. In fact, back at Baylor, he had SEVEN different Jethro Tull tour shirts, which allowed him to wear a different one each day of the week. And he frequently did so.

Those of us still shuffling this mortal coil might observe that Tull singer/songwriter/leader Ian Anderson has lost a great deal of his vocal range, and that iconic Tullsters Martin Barre, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, John Evan and Barriemore Barlow long ago ceased to be in the band.

But I'll bet Randall would remind us that Tull's rich catalog of LPs, including "Aqualung," "Songs from the Wood," "Living in the Past," "Crest of a Knave" and "Thick as a Brick," will be artfully represented; that the musicianship and presentation will be jaw-dropping; and that Anderson's charismatic presence will further document that he's one of the greatest frontmen of all time.

Ian Anderson Presents Jethro Tull, 8 p.m. Saturday, Grand Theater, Foxwoods; $40, $60; 1-800-200-2882.
