Plainfield — Claudia Blazquez, inserted into the goal just for penalty kicks, made two huge stops as 27th-seeded Waterford High School upset No. 6 Plainfield in the first round of the CIAC Class M girls' soccer tournament Tuesday.

After playing to a 1-1 draw through regulation and a pair of overtimes, the Lancers won the penalty kick shootout 3-2 to advance to Thursday's second round at No. 11 Sheehan, a 2-0 winner over No. 22 Ledyard in double overtime. That game will be played at 6 p.m.

"We've been playing much better the last few weeks," Waterford coach Chris Ghiglia said, "so I had a feeling we could pull the upset."

The Lancers (8-9-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first half when when Julia Florek's corner kick was deflected into the net off a Plainfield defender for an own goal.

Plainfield, the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament runner-up, tied the game with three minutes left in regulation when Izzy Newbury headed home a corner kick by Cassie Carleson.

Waterford goalie Skyler Henry made nine saves for the Lancers, who were outshot 20-3.

In other games:

• No. 20 East Lyme defeated No. 13 Naugatuck in the penalty kick round 16-14 to advance to the second round of the Class L state tournament. The score was 3-3 after regulation, evened with a goal from Naugatuck's Alyana Sosa with two minutes remaining, and two overtimes.

East Lyme (9-6-4), which will play at home at 6 p.m. Thursday against No. 29 Foran, got two goals from Karlie Rowe and one from Kayla Markovitz. Goalie Hayley Sorrentino made 16 saves in the victory.

The Vikings won after four rounds of penalty kicks.

"We played our hearts out," East Lyme coach Rachel Redding said. "And it came to PKs. We practiced those and it paid off."

• Tori Chandler scored in the first half as No. 17 Ellington edged No. 16 Montville 1-0 in the Class M first round. The Indians finished their season 10-7-1.

• No. 20 Lyman Memorial avenged two regular-season losses to St. Bernard with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Saints in the first round of the Class S state tournament. St. Bernard finished the season 10-8.

H.S. field hockey

• Miranda Arruda broke a scoreless tie six and a half minutes into the second half and No. 4 Stonington went on to beat No. 13 Haddam-Killingworth 2-0 in the first round of the Class S state tournament. Stonington (16-3) advanced to the quarterfinals to meet No. 12 Lewis Mills beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday in Stonington. Arruda broke through off a penalty corner, assisted by Erin Craig. Hannah Pratt then added her sixth goal in the last three games, scoring with 1:05 remaining when she rebounded her own shot. Aliza Bell made three saves in goal for the win.

H.S. volleyball

• Ledyard was beaten in the opening round of the Class M tournament on Monday night by East Haven 25-15, 25-21, 24-26 and 25-14. Katie Krupansky had 10 service points and six kills for the Colonels while Sela Gill added eight service points and 14 assists.

• Cromwell topped Wheeler in the opening round of the Class S tournament Monday, 25-15, 25-14, 25-4. Marisa Mulhern had eight digs, two kills and an ace for Wheeler and Nikki Collins had six digs and a kill.

College honors

• Mitchell College's Damian Houlden was named New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in men's soccer while four of his players were honored with all-conference selections. Junior T.J. Condon of Wheeler and sophomore William Ferguson of Old Lyme were named to the All-NECC first team while junior Andrew Storton made the second team and freshman Eduardo Tineo of Waterford was named to the all-sportsmanship team. The Mariners, who won their first NECC title, will play unbeaten St. Joseph's (Maine) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday at Tufts.
