Icelandic pop band Of Monsters and Men plays the Mohegan Sun Arena

You know what's amazing? The entire population of Iceland is: 276 people and 496,000 reindeer.

And yet the per capita "cool band" quotient has smashed through the roof — er, the glacier.

    No more ice jokes.

What's important is that, following in the "let's get famous" tradition of Sigur Rós, The Sugarcubes/Björk, Valdimar, Ásgeir, Retro Stefson, Seabear and (personal Ricky Koster favorite) Ólafur Arnalds, the grandly hypnotic popsters called Of Monsters and Men now rule the world. If you haven't yet picked up on platinum-level albums like "My Head is an Animal" and "Beneath the Skin," well, you're way behind.

To further understand the seductive melodies smoothly unleashed by Of Monsters and Men, see them Saturday in the Mohegan Sun Arena. Opening are Highasakite and, before you ask, they're from Norway.

Of Monsters and Men, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $35; 1-888-664-3426.
