Zero energy house open for tours May 2

Killingly — People's Action for Clean Energy Inc. is sponsoring tours of a zero energy house May 2.

Tours will run from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the home, which features foot-thick walls, solar panels, triple glaze windows and a heat pump water heater. The 2,600-square-foot home, winner of the Net Zero Energy Challenge, is able to generate roughly the same amount of energy that it uses.

Other energy-saving features include LED and compact fluorescent lighting, air source heating and cooling pumps, ceiling and slab insulation and an ICF foundation. All appliances are rated as Energy Star.

The home, situated in farm country, also will be used to show off French drains, which eliminate the ice dams found in gutters, and a permeable driveway. Other information will be available on ethanol fireplaces, solar-heated pools, minisplit heat pumps, solar hot water, radiant floors and affordable retirement homes.

In addition, the event will feature electric cars on display as well as information about surplus energy for electric cars.

Reservations for the tour, which costs $15, are available by going online to www.pace-cleanenergy.org. Click on the events tab and indicate a time for the tours and seminar.

Alternatively, checks can be sent to PACE, c/o Donna Grant, 128 Melrose Road, Broad Brook, CT 06016. For ticket information, call 860-623-5487; to get more tour information, call 860-693-4813.

The exact location of the home is being withheld from all but ticketholders, who will receive directions when they buy their tickets.

PACE is a nonprofit devoted to clean energy education.
