Creative economy to be topic of cultural summit

Waterford — Economic development and the creative economy will be the theme of the Southeastern Connecticut Cultural Coalition’s next summit Sept. 29.

The summit, part of the coalition’s Rising Tide series, will be held from 9:15 to 11 a.m. at Charter Oak Federal Credit Union's Community Room, 1055 New London Tpke.

“At the heart of the creative economy are the cultural and creative industries that lie at the crossroads of arts, culture, business and technology,” the coalition said in a release. “Featuring four models in our region, this summit will demonstrate the value that the creative industries have on municipalities, developers, and economic development plans.”

The summit will feature panelists Michael Blair of 38 Green Street Studios in New London, a renovated historic building housing artists and young business owners who have helped revitalized a downtown block; Morgan King of Poor Morgan, a custom screen printing and graphic design shop at the Velvet Mill in Stonington; Matthew Beaudoin of Mystic Knotwork, a business on Cottrell Street in Mystic that is based on the heritage of sailor knots, and Aaren Simoncini, owner of the microbrewery Beer'd Brewing Co.

Attendance at the summit is free, but participants are required to register online at http://culturesect.org/cultural-summits/.

The next summit will be Nov. 10 when the Rising Tide series addresses cultural facilities management.
