Avery Point will fight another day at NJCAA World Series

Enid, Okla. — The UConn Avery Point baseball team will spend at least one more day at Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The Pointers (36-12) beat Scottsdale, Ariz., 8-5 in a losers' bracket game at the NJCAA Division II World Series. Avery Point led 7-1 after scoring six runs in the top of the third inning, then held on for its second win of the tournament.

"You survive and advance,'' Avery Point coach Roger Bidwell said. "It doesn't have to be pretty. These guys have been competitive in every game. You can't count them out.''

Avery Point plays the LSU-Eunice/Kellogg, Mich., winner at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ledyard's Jordan Kowalski led off the third inning with an opposite-field homer to left and Kyle Hart's RBI double made it 3-1. Former Fitch and St. Bernard standout Izzy Davila added a two-run double and Avery Santos capped off the inning with a two-run single.

Chris Gonnelli (6-4) got the win, allowing seven runs and two hits over six innings with six strikeouts and two walks.

"He did a good job,'' Bidwell said. "We got what we needed out of him.''

Bidwell isn't sure who will start on the mound on Thursday, but said ace Doug Domnarski is not in the mix. Domnarski, the former Stonington High School standout, could pitch in relief if needed.

"Our pitching staff is running on fumes,'' Bidwell said.

Avery Point added a run in the top of the sixth for an 8-1 lead when Kowalski scored on a wild pitch. But Scottsdale scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth before Pete Aldrich struck out Scottsdale leadoff hitter Juistin Erlandson looking with the bases loaded to end the game.

Garrett DeLotto, Joel Acosta, Hart and Davila had two hits each for the Pointers and Davila drove in three runs. Avery Point's first run came in the top of the second when Davila singled home Andrew Hinckley.

Matt Rowland was 4-for-5 for Scottsdale, which was eliminated.

Avery Point, after getting rained out twice over the weekend, beat Madison College of Wisconsin 3-2 on Monday. The Pointers dropped into the losers' bracket with a 4-3 loss to Kellogg in 10 innings on Tuesday.

The Pointers are in playing in their sixth NJCAA World Series. A second-place finish in 2010 is their best showing.
