Losing streak beginning to weigh on the Sun

Mohegan — It feels somewhat counterintuitive to suggest that not even at midseason — and with a schedule in August that’s busier than boot camp — that a game with the balance of the schedule remaining falls in line with the idea of “must win.”

And no, the Connecticut Sun aren’t going to cancel the franchise if they lose tonight against Indiana at Mohegan Sun Arena (7 p.m.)

But then, here are the facts: Connecticut has lost five straight. The “I-told-you-so” buzzards are swirling. It’s not easy to find positives when you haven’t won in two weeks.

"We were talking about the importance of playing well at home,” Sun coach Anne Donovan said Friday after her team’s light workout. “In this streak, we've had some opportunities at home that we haven't been able to take advantage of. Coming back home is a really good thing right now."

The Sun have lost five straight in just about every way possible. Close games, high-scoring games, low-scoring games, blowouts. One of the five came recently to Indiana, a game in which the Fever shot 55 percent and Kelsey Bone got ejected for a flagrant foul against Fever rookie Natalie Achonwa.

In that game, veteran Tamika Catchings shot 9-for-10 from the field, helping the Fever to a 92-84 win. Indiana also made eight 3-pointers.

“We got back on track a little bit against New York, it was our offense that stalled,” Donovan said. “I think our defense makes good adjustments and we're still a solid defensive team. Catchings just had one of those nights and I think we can guard her better, yes."

    • The Sun announced Friday that tonight is Autism Night as part of its Community Spotlight program.

“With the help of many other proud supporters of Autism Speaks, a silent auction to benefit the Southeastern Connecticut Walk Now For Autism Speaks will take place on the Arena concourse during the game,” the team issued in a press release. “Those who would like to experience the excitement and family-friendly atmosphere of a WNBA game while also enjoying a discounted ticket price can visit http://bit.ly/1LLiH0H, click on “find tickets” and enter the code word “2015.”
