Sun waive injured Griffin, sign Buss to training camp contract

The Connecticut Sun waived forward Kelsey Griffin on Tuesday after she informed the team she would not be able to attend training camp because of a hip injury.

Connecticut later announced it had signed Tyra Buss, an undrafted free agent guard from Indiana.

“I am truly disappointed to not be able to start the WNBA season with the Sun,” Griffin said in a release. “This issue has been causing me discomfort for a number of weeks. While I thought rest would help resolve it, it hasn’t. As a result, I did not want to let the ownership, coach (Curt) Miller and the fans of the Connecticut Sun down. If I can’t train and play at 100 percent, then I believe it is unfair on the group and doesn’t sit well with me.”

Griffin was drafted third overall by the Minnesota Lynx in 2010 and traded moments later to the Sun. She started in 71 of 164 games and was a fan favorite. She was waived during training camp in 2015 after arthroscopic surgery on her left hip and hasn't played in the WNBA since.

Griffin has played for the Bendigo Spirit in Australia’s Women’s National Basketball League since 2012. The Alaska native became an Australian citizen in 2015 and helped its national team win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“We are disappointed that we had to waive Kelsey Griffin due to recent health concerns,” Miller said. “We were truly excited to add her veteran leadership and presence to our young and exciting roster. Kelsey’s health is our number one concern at this time, but we look forward to continuing our relationship as we move forward.”

Buss, a 5-foot-7 guard, both energized and transformed Indiana’s basketball program. She was part of Miller’s last recruiting class at Indiana before he stepped down in 2015, earning All-Big Ten first-team honors three times and graduating with several Hoosier career records.

Buss led the nation in minutes played (1,479) and minutes per game (40) her senior year. She also averaged 20.6 points, 4.7 assists and 2.1 steals and paced Indiana to the WNIT championship.

WNBA training camps open on Sunday. Teams may only have a maximum of 15 players in camp at a time.
