    Rick's List: Thanksgiving edition

Rick Koster offers weekly lists of ideas, notions and things that must be seen to be believed

Many holidays are characterized by feasts. In fact, it's hard to think of a holiday that isn't marked by a feast, although you wouldn't have wanted to attend any of my family's very literal Arbor Day meals. I particularly remember the year Mom came out of the kitchen bearing a tray with steamed pine. That was awful - although to this day my sister is equally adamant that the worst Arbor Day banquet we ever had was the one where she snapped off six teeth trying to chew the blackened Ironwood entree.

Anyway, most would agree that Thanksgiving has the best feast of all!

This is typically true, although I'd like to point out that, in 1982, while on the road with the band Broxton, in Bay City, Texas, for a variety of reasons, our Thanksgiving meal was decidedly atypical and came courtesy of the community's one 7-Eleven. I can't recall what the other guys selected, but I'm pretty sure this is what I had. Truth told, is seemed pretty good back then and it sounds pretty good now.

    1. A six pack of Coors longnecks

    2. One (1) bag of Mac's Spicy Plantation-style porkskins

    3. A package of Little Smokies cocktail-style sausages, microwaved and then dumped en masse in a double-ply brown paper sack for easy access and minimal grease

    4. 7-Eleven's house-brand beef-and-potato burrito

    5. 7-Eleven house-brand ham and Swiss on rye
