Mystic Seaport hosts Antique and Classic Boat Rendezvous

Mystic Seaport's steamship Sabino leads the annual Antique and Classic Boat Rendezvous parade down the Mystic River last year. The Sabino, built in 1908 in East Boothbay, Maine, is one of the last surviving coal-fired steamboats in regular operation today and is designated a National Historic Landmark vessel. (Sean D. Hulls will be shining and sails billowing in the wind as a parade of boats glide down the Mystic River. This weekend, the Mystic Seaport Museum will be home to the annual Antique and Classic Boat Rendezvous.

Roughly 35 vessels will be judged on excellence in restoration, authenticity and workmanship. Boat lovers will have the opportunity to gawk and swoon over these antique masterpieces designed by some of the great naval architects. The work of John G. Alden, one of the leading nautical designers of the 20th century, will be featured at the event. Alden is well-known in the maritime world for having designed over 900 ships that range from racing schooners to luxurious yachts.

What if watercraft aren’t your speed? Classic and antique Woodies (station wagons will exterior wood paneling) will be on display all weekend at the Village Green, courtesy of the New England Yankee Wood Chapter of the National Woodie Club. Talk about a weekend full of transportation eye candy.

Mystic Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sunday, Mystic Seaport Museum waterfront, Greenmanville Avenue; $28.95 adults, $26.95 ages 65 and up, $18.95 ages 4-14, free for kids 3 and younger; (860) 572-0711.
