    Local roundup: Montville boys win basketball opener

    Norwich — Buddy Dewaine scored 12 of his 33 points in the third quarter as Montville High School downed Norwich Tech, 83-46, on Wednesday's opening night of the boys' basketball season.

    Cody Calash added 19 points, Pat Podeswa had 14 points and Joel Greenwood scored 13 for Indians.

    Jacob Sulik had 15 points for the Warriors.

    In other games:

    • Alex Haines had 15 points and 15 rebounds to power Wheeler past Putnam, 68-60. Ryan Dussault added 18 points and nine rebounds while Jacob Raggon had 15 points for the Lions.

    • Sean Kelly scored a career-high 22 with seven rebounds and four assists as Bacon Academy beat East Lyme, 53-38, in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division. Cristian Brown had 11 points for the Vikings and Logan Banker scored nine.

    Girls' basketball

    • Cebria Outlow scored 24 points and Olivia Lane added 13 in Norwich Free Academy's 71-35 win over East Lyme in the ECC Large. The Wildcats jumped out to a 34-9 halftime lead. Theresa Durkee led the Vikings (0-1) with 15 points.

    • Gabrielle Joseph scored 12 as Notre Dame of Fairfield beat Ledyard, 44-30. Michelle Klinikowski had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Ledyard (1-2).

    • Brenda DeJesus had nine points as Cheney Tech edged Norwich Tech, 22-20, in the Constitution State Conference. Shella Jeanty had eight points for Norwich Tech (0-3) and Elanna Sanon added 10 rebounds.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Niko Randolph of Waterford edged Griswold's Zac Cassidy, 2-0, to win at 138 pounds and help the Lancers win their season opener, 54-27, in an ECC Small Division match.

    The Lancers had eight wins by pin - Ryan Botseas (120), Sam Lindblom (145), Noah Concascia (152), Spencer Sgandurra (160), Dillon McCarthy (171), Justin Keating (182), Ben Pickowitz (195) and Cody Cleary (220).

    • Bo Nguyen (106), Dakota Grover (160), Daniel Contino (195) and Daric Johnson (220) all won by pin for Ledyard in its 47-24 win over New London in the ECC Large. Ethan Santiago (145) and heavyweight Oscar Calcano won by pin for the Whalers and Alejandro Paulino won at 126 by technical fall.

    • Montville defeated Bacon Academy, 51-17, in a season opener. Nick Leraquento won by decision at 152 pounds while Ian Concascia (171) won by pin in 1:58 and Augustine Cornish pinned his 220-pound opponent in 25 seconds for the Indians.

    Boys' swimming

    • Benas Kirvelevicius won the 50-yard freestyle (23.58) and 100 freestyle (51.31) for East Lyme in its 97-86 loss to Middletown. Ryan Dumais won the 200 freestyle (2:00.15), Mitch Ryan own the 1-meter diving (296.50) and Jason Good, Ethan Opsahl, Dumais and Kirvelevicius won the 200 freestyle relay for the Vikings (1:40.34).
