    High school roundup: Wheeler girls win Class S tourney opener

    North Stonington - Kylie Baker banked in a layup as time expired to give 24th-seeded Wheeler High School a dramatic 34-32 victory over No. 9 Metro Learning Center of Bloomfield in the opening round of the CIAC Class S girls' basketball tournament Monday night.

    MLC had tied the game with 13 seconds left when the Lions beat a fullcourt press and got the ball to Nikki Collins, who passed the ball to Baker under the basket for the game-winner.

    Wheeler (9-13) will visit No. 8 Old Lyme in Thursday's second round at 7 p.m. Old Lyme ousted No. 25 Gilbert 74-26.

    Mackenzie Brayman scored 11 points to lead the Lions while Baker finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Maddie Porter pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

    In other first-round games:

    • Caitlyn Dittman had 20 points, seven rebounds and five blocks as No. 20 St. Bernard upended No. 13 Shepaug Valley, 49-26, in a Class S game. Kaitlyn Berkel had 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Saints (11-11), which will play at No. 4 Bolton on Thursday (7 p.m.).

    • Abby Stone had 26 points to lead Old Lyme past Gilbert. Julia Strycharz scored 12 for the Wildcats (17-6).

    • No. 8 Avon beat No. 25 Fitch, 56-31, in a Class L game. The Falcons finished 8-14.

    Hockey

    • Tyler Faulkner's second goal gave NFA/St. Bernard/Bacon/Stonington/Lyman its 5-4 overtime win over Masuk. Logan Morin scored twice for the Redhawks (11-9). Also, Maren Lancaster had a goal and an assist, Bryan Guetens had two assists, and Faulkner added an assist.

    Time changes

    • With another winter storm in the forecast for tonight, the starting times for a number of game have been moved up, including the Shoreline Conference boys' basketball tournament semifinal game between host Old Lyme and Coginchaug, which will tip at 5 p.m. instead of 7.

    Five CIAC girls' basketball tournament games involving schools have also changed starting times.

    In Class LL, NFA will host Darien at 5 p.m., and in Class M, Waterford hosts Rocky Hill at 6 p.m., Stonington hosts North Branford at 5, Montville hosts Bullard-Havens at 5 and Ledyard visits Simsbury at 5:30.
