    High school girls' basketball: Brennan, Kobyluck lead Waterford past Rocky Hill in Class M

    Waterford - Vanessa Kobyluck and Mia Brennan scored 14 points apiece as 12th-seeded Waterford High School defeated No. 21 Rocky Hill 59-46 in the first round of the CIAC Class M girls' basketball tournament Wednesday night.

    Claire Hurley added 10 points for the Lancers, (16-7) who will play host to No. 28 Montville, a 63-27 winner over No. 5 Bullard-Havens, in the second round on Friday night at 7.

    Waterford swept the season series from Montville, but both games were close, including a 50-45 overtime win on Feb. 3.

    In other first-round games:

    • Deanna McCarvell had 22 points, seven assists and three steals as No. 3 New London began its Class M title defense with a 66-48 win over No. 30 Ellington.

    India Pagan had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Charee Osborne had nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals for the Whalers (21-3). Jada Lucas added 16 points.

    New London will play host to No. 14 Kaynor Tech in Friday's second round (7 p.m.). The Panthers beat No. 19 Wilcox Tech, 54-27.

    • Cebria Outlow had 17 points and Haley Conley and Olivia Lane both scored 15 as No. 4 Norwich Free Academy thrashed No. 29 Darien, 73-35, in Class LL.

    MacKenzie Burke had 13 points for NFA (23-1), which will play host to No. 13 Trumbull on Friday at 7 p.m. Trumbull beat defending champion Lauralton Hall in the first round 50-33.

    • Taylor LaVallie scored a career-high 20 points to lead No. 28 Montville past Bullard-Havens in Bridgeport.

    The Indians, who reached double figures in wins for the ninth straight season, play at No. 12 Waterford in the second round Friday night.

    Kiah Strickland had 18 points and nine rebounds for Montville (10-12).

    • Margot Calmar scored 23 points and had 17 rebounds as No. 13 Stonington beat No. 20 North Branford in Class M, 71-39.

    Taty LaFrance Boyce had 28 points, five assists and four steals, Cameron Dreher had nine rebounds and Kate Hall had five steals for Stonington (16-8), which plays at No. 4 Cromwell in Friday's second round. Cromwell ousted No. 29 Hillhouse 64-42.

    • Katie Martensen had 14 points as No. 12 Simsbury scored the game's final nine points and rallied to beat No. 21 Ledyard, 36-32, in Class LL.

    Michelle Klinikowski had 12 points for Ledyard (12-11).
