Maranda to coach in all-star game

New London's Duane Maranda will lead Team Nutmeg in the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Super 100 Classic on June 27 in East Hartford.

New London High School's Duane Maranda jokingly said he's a bit daft to crazy for taking time from his summer to be a head coach at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Super 100 Classic senior all-star football game.

Maranda is now looking for some football crazy players to take part in the game scheduled for June 27 at Rentschler Field (4 p.m.).

"I'm nuts," Maranda said about being Team Nutmeg's coach. "I've been doing it the last couple of years. It's just an honor that I was asked. I also think it's important to try to get some new blood into it.

    "I'm excited."

Any graduating senior interested in playing should show up to the combine on March 29 at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center. Registration is at 10 a.m., and the combine starts at 11. Athletes should wear sneakers and something with their school name on it to make them easier to identify.

"All of the all-state winners get automatic invites," Maranda said. "We've heard from a little bit more than half."

Maranda's staff will have an southeastern Connecticut vibe with Tim King from Class S-Large champion Valley Regional/Old Lyme, Bacon Academy head coach Erik Larka, and New London assistants Pat Walsh and Jon Curry. King will be one of three 2014 state championship head coaches on the staff as Windsor's Rob Fleeting and Joe Della Vecchia of St. Joseph will also assist Maranda.

Fairfield Warde head coach Duncan DellaVolpe will lead Team Constitution.
