    NFA's Johnson sprints to two Class LL track and field titles

    New Britain — Norwich Free Academy's Jawaun Johnson sprinted to two individual titles during Tuesday's CIAC Class LL track and field championships at Willow Brook Park.

    In a hotly-contested-100 meter race, Johnson edged Danbury's Matthew Andrew, finishing in 11.04 seconds. Andrew crossed the line in 11.06.

    Johnson, a sophomore, also beat Andrew in the 200 meters, taking first in 22.12 seconds.

    NFA placed eighth overall with 31 points. Ridgefield won the team title with 102 points with Danbury (99) and Glastonbury (75) rounding out the top three.

    The Wildcats had three other competitiors place in the top seven in their events. Andris Vital was third in the 100 in 11.07 while Connor Gralton finished sixth in the 800 in 2:00.15 and Jordan Crawford was seventh in the 110 hurdles in 17.13.

    In the girls' meet, Olivia Lane earned a pair of top four finishes to pace NFA to seventh place. Lane took third in the shot put in 33 feet, one inch, and fourth in the discus in 111-8. The Wildcats had 36 points. Staples won the team title with 84 points and Danbury was second with 78.

    The Wildcats also picked up points in the pole vault as Kelsie Hall was second (10 feet) and Emily Marker fourth (nine feet), while Julie Bettencourt placed third in the javelin at 106-9, Marvelouse Guerrier took fourth in the triple jump (33-9.75) and Joyce Yuen was eighth (31-9).
