H.S. roundup: No. 24 Old Lyme stuns No. 1 Oxford in Class S baseball quarters

Oxford — Randy St. Germain has coached son Cooper and the rest of the Old Lyme High School baseball team's 10 seniors in a variety of sports since elementary school.

"I've known most of them since they were 2 or 3 years old," St. Germain said Saturday. "Daycare ... then coaching them in the all the different sports. They're just athletic. And they all can play. There's kids I don't play that would be starting on most teams in the Shoreline (Conference)."

No. 24 seed Old Lyme gave the Shoreline three teams in the Class S state tournament semifinals, taking out No. 1 Oxford 4-3 Saturday in the quarterfinal round. Old Lyme (13-11) will play No. 4 St. Paul in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at New Britain's Beehive Field, while No. 3 Morgan and No. 23 Cromwell, also representing the Shoreline, will face off at 5 p.m.

Will Visgilio pitched a complete game for Old Lyme, which scratched out a run with two outs in the first inning off pitcher Cole Chudoba — previously 9-0 with a 1.84 earned run average — on an RBI single by Alex Bellas to score Callum Sawden, and added a two-run home run by Brett Hartmann in the second.

"Their pitcher was 9-0, so it's not like he was used to losing or being behind at all," St. Germain said. "When Alex singled to score Callum to make it 1-0, that was a big part of the game. I don't think they were used to that."

This same core group of boys also reached the Class S semifinals in boys' soccer this school year, as well as winning the Shoreline Conference tournament.

"It does not surprise me that the Shoreline is well-represented (in baseball)," St. Germain said. "Especially this year, some of the coaches were talking about it was wide open. Oxford (16-4 regular season) still lost four games on the year. It's not like you had that No. 1 team everyone was talking about."

Griffin Powers doubled and drove in a run, Cooper St. Germain had two hits and Sawden doubled for Old Lyme. Visgilio struck out one and walked two.

    Oxford finished the season 21-5.
