    H.S. girls' basketball: Montville beats Plainfield for first win

    Montville — Emily Meigs and Brianna Leone dominated play inside as Montville won its first game of the season with a 54-36 girls' basketball victory over Plainfield on Tuesday night.

    Meigs finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Leone added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians (1-4), who also got 12 points from Brooke LaVallie. 

    In other games:

    • Caitlyn Dittman had 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks to power St. Bernard past Terryville, 43-25. Emily Nelson added a career-high 18 points for the Saints (3-2), who took a 20-13 halftime lead.

    • Kayla Jean-Pierre had 15 points and nine rebounds as Waterford cruised to a 55-23 nonleague win over Morgan. Leading 12-5 after one quarter, the Lancers (4-1) took charge in the second quarter, holding Morgan to two points and opening a 22-7 halftime lead. Mia Brennan added 11 points, seven steals and six assists for Waterford.

    • Pittsfield (Mass.) build a 19-point halftime lead and cruised to a 72-33 win over ledyard in the opening round of the Centaur Holiday Classic at Woodstock Academy. Julia Lavin scored 14 points for the Colonels (1-3), who will play Windsor in Thursday's consolation game. Windsor lost to host Woodstock 36-33 in overtime.

    • Ellington scored the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds remaining and held on for a 38-37 win over Fitch in the opening round of the Sheehan Holiday Tournament in Wallingford. Honora Ryan had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons (0-5) while Ciarra Jimenez added eight points.

    • Raina Haase had 14 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and two steals during Wheeler's 49-39 nonleague loss to Parish Hill. Emma Morgan added 13 points for the Lions (0-5), going 9-for-10 from the foul line, while Samantha Muller finished with eighth points.

    • Cheney Tech held off Norwich Tech 45-41 in the Constitution State Conference. Madison Bodley scored 15 points for the Warriors.
