    Washington — Sophomore Kyle Jacobson had three goals and an assist as the Eastern Connecticut Eagles defeated Shepaug Valley/Litchfield/Thomaston/Nonnewaug 8-2 on Saturday in a high school hockey game at The Gunnery School.

    The Eagles (3-0) are off to the best start in program history.

    Evan Tower added a pair of goals for the Eagles (Kevin Close assisted on both) while Close, Zach Bradley and Will Cannella each scored a goal, Quenten Dean had three assists, Ryan Huta and Ethan Stewart each had an assist and goalie Rylin Fowler made 14 saves over two periods before Sean Buckley allowed no goals in the third period.

    In other games:

    • Sheehan scored three goals in the third period to rally past the Redhawks 4-3. Brendan Green Andrew Bannon and Steve Turchetta each scored a goal for the Redhawks (1-2) while Antonia Pisani and Dyland Heald had assists and goalie Spencer Flynn made 27 saves.

    Boys' basketball

    • Cromwell outlasted Old Lyme 53-50 in competitive Shoreline Conference game as the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the young season. Aedan Using led Old Lyme with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Jacob Coverdale scored 13 points and Ray Doll added 10 rebounds and six points.

    "This was a good sign for us," said Old Lyme coach Kirk Kaczor, noting that Cromwell and East Hampton were among the preseason conference favorites. "I thought we played pretty well. No lead was more than five points the entire game."

    • St. Bernard remained unbeaten with a 67-47 win over Montville. Joseph Beltran led the Saints (3-0) with 16 points and teammates Connor Svab (14) and Hunter Baillargeon (13) also scored in double figures. Scoring in double figures for Montville (0-4) were John Domijan (12), Eric Beavin (11) and Gennaro Davis (10). Domijan also had 13 rebounds for Montville, which led 30-28 at halftime before Baillargeon's nine points led St. Bernard to a 19-8 edge in the third quarter.  

    • Mikey Buscetto had 17 points, nine assists and four steals as unbeaten Waterford routed Baystate Academy (Mass.) 80-38 in the Basketball Hoopsfest Showcase at Western New England University in Springfield, Mass. The Lancers (3-0) opened up a 25-9 lead after one quarter and were never threatened. Trevor Yeomans added 10 points and six rebounds for Waterford while Max Mazzella and Walker Sutman each scored 10 points.

    Girls' basketball

    • Emily Meigs scored 22 points, leading Montville to a 46-32 win over St. Bernard. Lauren Velazquez scored 11 for Montville (2-1). Briana Beverly had 10 points, Carly Potts scored nine and Amber Caldwell had 12 rebounds for St. Bernard (2-2).
