Sound View streetscape a community success

In response to the letter “Sound View changes a waste of money” (July 12), the Sound View streetscape project has given Sound View its first facelift in decades. The RiverCOG, which represents 17 regional towns, unanimously supported Old Lyme's application for a federal reimbursement grant to develop intermodal means to visit Sound View. Old Lyme is responsible for only 20 percent of the design and construction costs, after reimbursement.

The design called for new ADA accessible sidewalks, bump-outs, banner poles, signage, landscaping, redesigned parking, a bike lane, and required a loss of 22 parking spots on Hartford Avenue. Actual construction costs came under the approved total construction cost.

The paving of the project area, for public safety, was approved and completed within budget. The punch list to complete the project, including some paving remediation, will be done by the end of the year. Construction was performed to avoid conflict with the area’s seasonal business activity. The Carousel, Vecchitto’s Italian Ice, the beach bars, Sound View Market, all private parking lots and a new restaurant, RollinRed’s Beach Shanty, are open for business.
