Ocean Beach/Kelley race a fitting tribute

On Aug. 5 over 900 runners toed the line for the 55th annual Ocean Beach/John and Jessie Kelley foot race. Jessie and John would have been surprised that this event has continued through the years.

John and Jessie were a humble couple who not only mentored and helped many young people but also gave much to the community. Neither ever sought the limelight. Jessie helped and mentored quietly. John did too, but he was also a two-time Olympian, Boston Marathon winner, Yonkers Marathon six-time winner and recipient of numerous honors.

Race Director Way Hedding, countless volunteers and generous donors, New London and Waterford police and fire departments and many others gave time and energy.

This is a refreshing reminder of what community spirit can do for the people of our surrounding towns. Runners came from Florida, New Jersey, New York and all of New England.

This is the only half-marathon that has no registration fee, but that is not why so many come to run, support and cheer. They came to honor John and Jessie in a way that both would have liked: run, enjoy life, be happy, laugh and be nice to everyone, rain or shine.
