    Local roundup: McCarvell scores 1,000 career point as New London girls win

    New London - New London High School's Deanna McCarvell surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career, scoring 12 as the Whalers beat Plainfield 67-55 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division girls' basketball game on Friday night.

    McCarvell, a senior guard, is the first player from the program to reach the mark since Chanel Johnson did it in 2011. She reached the milestone on a free throw with 5:15 left in the third quarter and finished the game with 1,007 points. She also had four assists.

    India Pagan scored 18 with eight rebounds, Jada Lucas had 15 points, six rebounds and six steals and Charee Osborne had 12 points and nine rebounds for New London (2-0, 1-0).

    In other games:

    • Hailey Conley scored 29 points as Norwich Free Academy beat Masuk 72-32 in the championship game of the Masuk Tip-Off Tournament. Conley, a sophomore, had seven 3-pointers. Maya Bell and Cebria Outlow had 12 points each for NFA (2-0).

    • Abby Stone scored 18 points with nine rebounds and three steals as Old Lyme beat East Hampton 52-38 in a Shoreline Conference game. Catie Quaratella and Hannah Paynter had eight points each for Old Lyme (2-0, 2-0).

    • Margot Calmar scored 18 points and had nine rebounds as Stonington beat Waterford 57-52 in an ECC Medium Division game. Tatyana LaFrance Boyce had 19 points, four assists and three steals and freshman Kate Hall scored 12 for Stonington (2-0, 1-0). Sarah Pacheco had 15 points and eight rebounds, Shea Spellman scored 17 and Claire Hurley had 11 points for Waterford (1-1, 0-1).

    • Montville opened its season with a 43-35 win over Killingly in an ECC Medium Division game. Kiah Strickland scored 14 points and Taylor LaVallie and Naomi Clark had nine points each for Montville.

    • Woodstock Academy broke open a tight game in the third quarter and went on to defeat Wheeler 51-35 in a nonleague game. The Lions (1-1) only trailed by five, 27-22, at the half but were outscored 12-2 in the third. Mackenzie Brayman scored nine points to lead Wheeler while Kylie Baker added seven.

    Johnson dedication

    • There will be a ceremony on Sunday at the James Johnson Basketball Court at Toby May Park in New London, beginning at 1:30 p.m. A plaque and stone will be dedicated in honor of Johnson, an AAU and former New London High School girls' basketball coach who died in 2013.

    College honors

    • Coast Guard senior goalkeeper Richie Burns has been named a second team All-American by the 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He's the first Coast Guard player to earn NSCAA All-America honors since 1994 and just the sixth Bear to ever be named an All-American by the NSCAA.

    Burns is the first Coast Guard player since Steve Roncone in 1994 to be named to the All-America team.

    The Bears earned their first trip to the NCAA tournament in 33 years. He passed Jim Wimberley (1998-2000) for most shutouts in a single season (10) and most career shutouts (26).

    • Coast Guard senior All-American Nate Giorgio was named the D3wrestle.com National Wrestler of the Week after going 5-0 overall, registering three pins, and being named the most outstanding wrestler at the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College.

    In the championship match Giorgio took down Alex Gomez of Ithaca, the top-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds in the nation, 11-5.
