    Local roundup: Coast Guard finishes third at New England Duals

    Springfield, Mass. - Coast Guard's Nate Giorgio (133 pounds) and Mike Shermot (174) each went 4-0 as the Bears went 3-1 and finished third at the New England Wrestling Association Duals on Sunday at Springfield College.

    Giorgio, a senior All-American, improved to 28-0. Coast Guard (9-6) beat Bridgewater State 48-3 and Rhode Island College 22-17, lost to Roger Williams 23-18 and finished up with a 31-15 win over Springfield. Heavyweight Mark Howard and Dan Fiorvanti (184) won three matches each for Coast Guard.

    Women's swimming

    • Darlene Sao won a pair of individual events and was part of a winning relay team leading Coast Guard to a 139.5-94.5 win over Clark. Sao won the 100 freestyle (55.97) and the 200 freestyle (1:58.67) and the Bears 200 freestyle relay team of Patti Eidenire, former Fitch star Jacklyn Kokomoor, Carly Campbell and Sao won in 1:43.27 for the Bears (4-7).

    Kaitlyn Toth won both the 400 IM (5:02.06), and the 100 butterfly (1:03.05), Eidenire won the 50 freestyle (25:13) while Julianne Rogers won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.63). The Bears' 200 medley relay team of Carolyn Slife, Julianna Rogers, Caitlyn Gever and Eidenire won with a time of 1:57.15.

    Men's swimming

    • Christian Brindamour and Ben Morseth each won a pair of events leading Coast Guard to a 122-88 win over Clark. Brindamour won the 100 freestyle (47.90) and the 200 freestyle (1:49.16) while Ben Morseth won the 50 freestyle (22.33) and the 100 backstroke (55.05) for the Bears.

    Also winning events for Coast Guard (5-4) were Mike Franco in the 1,000 freestyle (10:16.70), Elliot VanDeren in the 400 IM (4:23.90) and Ross Garrett in the 100 butterfly (52.71). Coast Guard's 200 medley relay team of John Franks, Carl Fuhs, Garrett and Brandon Ledford won in 1:41.43.

    H.S. indoor track

    • Sydnee Spruill of Fitch finished second in the high jump at the SCC Coaches Invitational at New Haven. Spruill's jump was 5-feet, 2-inches. The Fitch boys' team had a pair of eighth-place finishes. Eli Rosario Vega was eighth in the shpt put and the 4x800-meter relay team of Daelon Morgan, Cameron Wilhelm, Joel Lee and Matt Kerst were also eighth.
