    Local roundup: Conn's Mairead Hynes named NESCAC Rookie of the Year

    New London - Connecticut College freshman Mairead Hynes was named New England Small College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in women's basketball on Wednesday.

    The forward averaged 16.9 points and 10.4 rebounds a game for the Camels, second-best in the NESCAC in both categories, while shooting 48.3 percent from the floor. She also made 132 free throws, a Conn single-season record, while finishing with 11 double-doubles, including a career-high 36 points against Rhode Island College and a career-high 20 rebounds against Trinity.

    "She had an amazing season and made an immense impact on our team and in our league during her first year," coach Brian Wilson said of Hynes, who was twice named the NESCAC Player of the Week. "One of Mairead's best traits is her desire to improve. We we know she is not satisfied and we are excited to watch her develop in the years to come."

    Men's basketball

    • Christian Vital had 12 points and five rebounds as third-seeded St. Thomas More beat No. 6 Bridgton, 77-74, in the first round of the New England Prep School Athletic Conference Class AAA tournament. Ryan Peterson had 10 points and seven rebounds, Sterling Taplan had 10 points and six rebounds, and Ryan Funk scored 11 for T-More, which will play at No. 2 Northfield Mount Hermon in Saturday's semifinals at 1 p.m.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Endicott took a 7-1 halftime lead and went on to beat Conn College 12-6 in a nonleague game. Ross Thompson had two goals and two assists, Tucker Mscisz scored twice and Penn Sednaoui and Wyatt Tompkins each scored a goal for Conn (0-2).

    H.S. hockey

    • Jimmy Fitzmaurice scored twice and Zach Jones had a shorthanded goal and two assists for the Eastern Connecticut Eagles in its 5-4 loss to Wethersfield/Rocky Hill/Middletown. Larry Nolan scored and Tyler Luke had 38 saves for the Eagles (4-15).
