    Local roundup: Smith leads Ledyard to victory in baseball

    Ledyard — Nick Smith went 4-for-5, including a home run, with six RBI and four runs as the Ledyard High School baseball team trounced East Haven on Tuesday, 25-12, in a non-league game.

    Ledyard had 20 hits in 38 at bats with 21 RBI.

    Lucas Saccone had three hits, including a triple, with four runs and three RBI for the Colonels (2-0) and Nick Traystman had two hits, including a double, with three RBI and three runs. Also, Andrew Byrd also went 4-for-5, including a double, with three RBI and two runs, Ty Ebdon went 2-for-3, including a double, with three runs and an RBI, and Anthony Viteritto scored three times.

    In other games:

    • Wheeler lost to Ellis Tech in a nonleague game, 6-2. Chris Munzer singled and doubled for Wheeler (0-2).

    H.S. softball

    • Katrina Awad pitched a three-hitter as Montville beat Ledyard 4-2 in a nonleague game. Awad struck out nine with one walk and Alex Clemons had two hits for Montville. Jessica Kuelling singled and doubled and Madison Sanborn had a run-scoring double for Ledyard.

    • Fitch backed Caroline Taber's two-hitter with a 14-hit attack and beat East Lyme 12-0 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division. Nalissa Amar had three hits for Fitch (3-0, 1-0) and Taber (3-0) struck out nine. Jackie Lewis had a three-run double and Taylor Wolfgang, Cassie Woods and Olivia Knots had two hits each for Fitch. East Lyme is 2-1, 0-1.

    • Abby Blanchard went 3-for-3 with two runs and Trinity Lennon struck out seven as Stonington beat Westerly, 5-3. Rhianna Maynard had two hits and an RBI for the Bears (3-0).

    • East Hampton beat Old Lyme in a Shoreline Conference game, 10-9. Kyra Teixeira was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, two RBI and scored twice for Old Lyme and teammate Lexi Duddy doubled and drove in a run.

    • Kenya Capers had a triple, home run, two runs and two RBI for New London lost its season-opener, 16-10, to Windham.

    H.S. girls' lacrosse

    • Jen Sieczkiewicz had four goals and two assists as Stonington downed St. Bernard, 12-4, in the ECC Small. Margit Burgess and Margot Calmar each had three goals for the Bears (3-0, 3-0) and Rachel Banks and Desiree Humsey both scored. Flora Klise had two goals for the Saints and Nancy Kuhn added a goal and an assist. Also, Kara Bassett scored.

    • Belle Kenny scored six goals as East Lyme beat Woodstock 15-3 in an ECC Large Division game. Vanessa Vurno and Steph daLeforcade had two goals each and Alex Rose made eight saves for the Vikings (3-0, 3-0).

    • Ellie Phetteplace scored six goals and had an assist, leading Ledyard to an 11-10 win over Bacon in the ECC Large Division. Gretchen Montgomery made seven saves and Liz Austin scored three goals for Ledyard (1-1, 1-1).

    • Riley Dimmock and Leah Petrini each scored four goals in Waterford's 16-3 win over Griswold in the ECC Small. Julie Chabot, Lexi Lewis and Ava Guthrie had two goals apiece for the Lancers (2-1, 2-1).

    In Monday's action, Petrini had four goals and Mary Grace Wyatt had two goals and two assists in a 16-2 win over Montville in the ECC Small. Rachel Martini and Karlee Rewers scored for the Indians.

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • Bacon outscored Waterford 8-2 in the third quarter en route to an 18-8 in an ECC Small Division game. Billy Barrs scored three goals, Logan Bowdish had two goals and Michael Beltran had a goal and two assists for Waterford (2-1, 2-1).

    • Logan Morin and Ben Thompson scored four goals each as NFA beat Fitch 15-3 in an ECC Large Division game. Kyle Ton had three goals and three assists and Morin had three assists for NFA (2-0, 2-0). Fitch is 1-2, 1-2.

    College baseball

    • Groton's Izzy Davila hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, the first of the season for Avery Point in its 6-2 win over the Mitchell JV. Groton's Pete Aldrich gave up four hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts for his first collegiate win and Ledyard's Jordan Kowalski had three hits, two runs and an RBI for the Pointers (17-8). Andrew Hinckley added three hits and an RBI.

    • Former Fitch standout Aaron Hill was 3-for-4 with two doubles, leading UConn to a 7-0 win over Fairfield in a nonleague game. Andrew Zapata (3-0) pitched seven scoreless innnigs for the win, striking out five with one walk and allowing four hits. Vinny Siena had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs for UConn (23-13).

    H.S. boys' tennis

    • Waterford beat Killingly 7-0 in an ECC Medium Division match. Willie Dong, James Zhu, Hugh Sokolski and Matt Dipallina won singles matches for the Lancers (2-0, 2-0). 

    College softball

    • Coast Guard Academy split a non-conference doubleheader with Trinity College, losing the first game 12-4 and winning game two by a 6-3 score. In game one, Morgan Kingston had two hits and two RBI and Hannah Ingerson had a three-run home run for the Bears (12-14). Jessie Richardson went 2-4 with two RBI and Emma Hvozdovich had a home run and two RBI.
