    Local roundup: Schooners win on Iannotti's RBI single in the 10th

    Groton — Lou Iannotti's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Mystic Schooners to a 3-2 win over the Plymouth Pilgrims in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Saturday night.

    The Schooners (10-2), who had a nnie-game winning streak snapped on Friday, trailed 2-0 after seven innings. Former Fitch standout Aaron Hill (UConn) hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game. Hill finished a 3-for-4.

    Richard Slenker (Yale) led off the bottom of the 10th with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Baker (Stony Brook). Hill was intentionally walked and Ben Ruta (Wagner) singled to load the bases before Iannotti (Quinnipiac) singled to deep right-centerfield.

    Ryan Thomas (Marist) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Jesse Berardi (St. john's) was 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Schooners.

    Tigers blanked

    • Four pitchers from the Tri-City ValleyCats combined to pitch a six-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Connecticut Tigers in a New-York Penn League game at dodd Stadium in Norwich. Brett Pirtle was 3-for-4 and Victor Padron tripled for the Tigers (0-2). 

    Zone VI Senior Legion

    • Connor Elliot pitched a one-hitter and Logan Banker drove in three runs as Niantic beat New London 9-0. Elliot did not walk a batter and struck out three for Niantic (1-1) while Ben Keating added a solo home run and Mike Morgan and Owen Tretter each drove in a pair of runs.

    Zone VI Junior Legion

    • Shawn Anhalt pitched six strong innings and had four hits as Niantic beat Norwich 13-1. Anhalt allowed five hits and struck out five for Niantic (4-2).  

    Auto racing

    • The New London-Waterford Speedbowl's weekly Saturday night racing card was washed out, including a special 50-lap Late Model feature. Racing will resume again next Saturday.
