    Local roundup: Flannery wins Late Model race at Speedbowl before rain cuts evening short

    Waterford — Anthony Flannery Jr. captured the 30-lap Late Model feature at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday night, one of four features completed before heavy rain forced Speedbowl officials to end their night early.

    Flannery took the lead from Ray Christian III just five laps into the race and never trailed, surviving a caution with 21 laps remaining.

    Other feature winners were Jack Aqualina (25-lap Limited Sportsman), and Marissa Morgan (20-lap Mini Cups) while Craig Lutz was declared winner of the SK Modified race after rain brought the race to halt after 15 laps. The Mini Stock feature was not held.

    Zone VI Senior Legion

    • Matt Pryzbysz's shutout in the second game capped off a doubleheader sweep for Niantic, beating Willimantic 10-4 and 3-0. Pryzbysz struck out eight and teammates Hunter Sheffield, Logan Banker, Trevor Delesdernier and Connor Elliott had two hits each. Delesdernier went 4-for-4 and was the winning pitcher in the opener. Jack Livingston struck out five over the final two innings and mike Morgan had two hits for Niantic (6-4).

    • Norwich split a doubleheader with Jewett City, winning the opener 5-4 and losing the second game 7-6. Rico Adams had three hits and Sean Janos had a two-run double for Norwich (6-10) in the opener. Jesus Garcia's RBI in the in the seventh gave Jewett City (6-5) the win in the second game.

    • Ledyard swept a doubleheader from Moosup to get back to the .500 mark. Ledyard (7-7) won the opener 10-2 and the second game 5-2. Luke Saccone was 3-for-4 with three RBI, Ryan Francis drove in two runs and Kevin Knowles and Troy Stefanski had two hits and two runs scored each in the opener. John Moody earned the win, allowing six hits and two runs over six innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

    Michael Dellaporta allowed one hit over 6.1 innings for the win in the second game. Kyle Whipple and Knowles each scored twice and Stefanski earned the save.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (15)

    • Derek Pelletier went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs as Groton beat Pawcatuck 8-5. Dominic Patti earned the win with five innings on one-run ball and also scored twice. Jayson Tuggle (RBI) and Tyler Stafford each had two hits and scored a run and Wade Post scored and drove in a run for Pawcatuck.

    • Tri-County broke a 4-4 tie on a successful suicide squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh inning, beating New London 5-4. Matt Ely pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the win and Brad Ashton scored two runs. For New London, Elijah Martinez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Donovan Williams pitched a complete game.  

    District 6 Babe Ruth (14)

    • Max Adams and Brandon Beck combined to pitch a two-hitter as Waterford beat Ledyard 17-2. Adams had three hits and drove in three runs and Nick Porazzi and Liam Spellman had two hits each for Waterford.

    • Jake Schelkly and Jacob Diaz combined to throw a two-hitter in East Lyme's 10-2 win over New London. Sean Demers, Liam Holloway, Eddie Kaftan and Tom Mason had two hits each for East Lyme and Joe Ennis singled and played strong defense for New London.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (13)

    • Waterford defeated East Lyme 6-2 as Peter Kiefer had a single and double and Peyton Sutman singled home a pair of runs.

    • Ledyard defeated Tri-Country 2-0 as Riley Gagnon had a pair of hits.

    District 10 softball (11-12)

    • Nora Ryan, Karly Morales and Brianna Serabian had three hits apiece in Groton/Mystic's 16-1 win over Ledyard in Pool B.  Ellie Hohlfelder struck out 11 in four innings for Groton/Mystic (2-1) while Samantha Fancher had a hit and drove in the lone run for Ledyard (1-2).

    • Kelly Laplante had four hits, including a triple, as East Lyme defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 11-3. Olivia Quagan pitched a two-hitter for East Lyme (3-0) while Mya Delesdernier, Isabel Casey and Angie Venditti had two hits each. Lyme/Old Lyme is 0-3.

    • Montville defeated New London 16-1 on Friday night in Pool A. Alexis Michon pitched a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts for Montville (2-1) while Brooke Cronin had a single, triple and scored two runs while Maggie Wainwright reached base five times and scored three runs. Emilia Skrabacz scored the lone run for New London (0-3).

    • Mystic/Groton defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 3-2 in seven innings in a Pool B game on Friday. Karly Morales had two hits and drove in all three runs for Mystic/Groton and Ellie Hohlfeder had 10 strikeouts over six innings. Kassidy Standish went the distance for Lyme/Old Lyme with four strikeouts.
