    Local roundup: Waterford moves into first place in Zone VI

    Waterford — Waterford swept a doubleheader from Moosup on Sunday to take over first place in the American Legion baseball Zone VI race.

    Waterford (12-4) won the opener 9-2 and the second game 17-5. Connor Lewis (3-0) won the opener, allowing three hits and one run over five innings with eight strikeouts and four walks. Steven Gerovitz and Kevin Johnson each singled and doubled and Alex Petchark had a double for Waterford.

    Brent Conderino had five hits, inculding a double, for Waterford in the second game. Lewis was 3-for-4 with a double and homer, Justin Keating had two singles and a double and Mike Rocchett had two hits for Waterford.

    In another game:

    • Troy Stefanski tripled with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored on John Moody's sacrifice fly as Ledyard/Pawcatuck beat Danielson 5-4. It completed a rally by Ledyard/Pawcatuck (10-9), which trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Francis drove in two runs, Stefanski was 2-for-3 and scored twice and Michael Bruce allowed five hits over seven innings for the win.

    Tigers are blanked

    • Three Vermont pitchers combined to pitch a three-hitter as the Lake Monsters beat the Connecticut Tigers 6-0 in a New York-Penn League game. Kade Scivicque was 2-for-4 and Joey Havrilak's single with two outs in the ninth inning was the only other hit for the Tigers (8-8).  

    NL-Waterford Speedbowl

    • Keith Rocco won a pair of races, including the 200th of his career, to highlight a seven-race Fourth of July holiday card at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday night. Rocco captured the 30-lap Late Model feature in his first race of the evening and later came back to win the 35-lap SK Modified feature for win No. 201.

    There were a pair of Mini Stock features after rain washed out the race a week ago. Doug Curry won the opening 25-lap feature with Mark Panaroni winning the second Mini Stock race. Other winners were Paul Buzel (SK Light Modifieds), Al Stone III (Limited Sportsman) and Josh Galvin (New England Truck Series).

    District 10 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Jeffrey LaLima allowed two hits over five innings with five strikeouts as Mystic beat Groton 9-2. Cameran McGugan homered and scored twice and Eric Leuchner had two hits and drove in two runs for Mystic. Timmy Lynch, Alex DelCampo and LaLima had two hits each for Mystic.

    District 10 LL softball (9-10)

    • Carli LoPresto pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts, leading Pawcatuck to a 12-3 win over Bozrah. Phoebe Werling had two hits and drove in four runs and Madelyn Stepski singled, doubled and had two RBI for Pawcatuck. Katie Bradford struck out six in three innings of relief for Bozrah.
