    Local roundup: Waterford wins 9-10 softball final opener

    Orange — Anna Donahue had three hits and Abby Maynard drove in two runs as Waterford beat Westport 5-4 on Saturday in the Connecticut Little League (ages 9-10) softball finals.

    Waterford can wrap up the title with a win in Sunday's game, which begins at 4 p.m. A Westport victory would force a third and deciding game on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

    Milena Walker pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the win. Donahue tripled to lead off the fifth inning, when Waterford scored four runs. Autumn Brothers tripled, Anna Dziecinny and Maddie Burrows had two hits each and Tori Kiefer and Walker each had a hit and scored a run for Waterford.

    • A two-run single by Connor Fitzsimons (Central Connecticut) highlighted a four-run, fifth inning as the Keene Swamp Bats beat the Mystic Schooners, 6-3, on the final day of the regular season. Lucas Luopa (Eckerd College) had two hits, including a double, and scored for the Swamp Bats (13-29). Jesse Berardi (St. John’s) hit a two-run home run for the Schooners (26-16) and Louis Iannotti (Quinnipiac) had two hits, including an RBI double, and scored. Mystic will play host to a playoff game on Monday at 6 p.m.

    Tigers lose

    • The Connecticut Tigers lost to the West Virginia Black Bears in a New York-Penn League game, 7-6. The Tigers (18-21) scored all of their runs in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Shane Zeile. Cam Gibson was 3-for-5 and Brett Pirtle and Zeile had two hits each for the Tigers.

    Pawcatuck/Westerly starts World Series play

    • Pawcatuck/Westerly begins its quest for a world championship Sunday as it plays Sunnyside of Tucson, Arizona, at the Junior Softball (13-14) World Series in Kirkland, Wash. Pawcatuck/Westerly won the East regional title on July 30. Sunnyside won the 2013 Little League Majors (11-12) World Series and was a Junior Softball semifinalist last summer. Pawcatuck/Westerly is in Pool B along with Rotterdam (Netherlands), Olmeca (Mexico), Robinson (Texas) and Sunnyside.

    Waterford plays for state LL title

    • Waterford is a win away from a state championship as it plays Southington South for the Little League majors (11-12) title Sunday at Volunteer Field in Newington (2 p.m.) Waterford has won both of its games in the state final four by a combined score of 26-9. Should Southington South win, then a decisive game would be played Monday at the same site (7 p.m.)
