    High school roundup: Stonington baseball team keeps rolling

    Stonington — Billy Keane pitched a complete-game five-hitter and the Stonington High School baseball team posted its fourth straight shutout Thursday afternoon, topping Ledyard 7-0.

    Kyle Whipple had a three-run homer in the first inning and John Moody was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs scored for the Bears (7-3).

    "It's our fourth shutout in a row. I've been coaching for a long time and at any level that's very impressive," Stonington coach Bob Cahoone said. "They're really coming together. The kids are really enjoying themselves."

    Ledyard is 4-4.

    In other games:

    • Winning pitcher Jeremy Santos allowed three hits over 6.2 innings with six strikeouts and went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI as New London beat Plainfield 9-5 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division. Freddy Hidalgo had two hits, two runs and two RBI for New London (5-5, 2-3) and Freddy Pacheco added two hits, a run, and an RBI.

    • Brody Labbe pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts as Windham beat St. Bernard 4-1 in the ECC Small. Steven Gerovitz hit an RBI single for the Saints (2-8, 1-2) and Josh Gurnack singled.

    • Walker Sutman pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and No. 2 Waterford rode a seven-run fourth inning to a 13-2 win over Old Lyme. Justin Keating was 3-for-5 with three RBI, Jake Mangual was 3-for-4, Dan Castelpoggi had two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, Michael Burrows hit a home run and Chase Speller drove in four runs for the Lancers (8-0). Coooper St. German was 2-for-3 and scored a run for Old Lyme (3-7).

    • Kevin Johnson was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and Burrows pitched a one-hitter over six innings with nine strikeouts for his fourth win as Waterford topped Norwich Free Academy 17-1 Wednesday. Speller, Burrows and Mangual added two hits each and Burrows added four RBI for Waterford. Cam Milton had NFA's only hit.

    • TT Bowens hit a three-run homer as part of a seven-run second inning as Montville defeated Woodstock Academy 9-2 on Wednesday. Jeremy Sagun added two hits and two RBI for the Indians and Michael Kurasz went the distance, scattering six hits while striking out nine.

    Softball

    • St. Bernard scored five runs in the first inning and went on to pick up its first win of the season, beating Windham 6-3. Sophie Nelson was 2-for-4, also striking out seven and walking none to earn the pitching victory. Brianna Beverly added a solo home run in the fourth inning for St. Bernard.

    • Brooke Arruda was 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and five runs scored and Abby Flakus added a homer in Stonington's 19-4 victory over Wheeler in a game shortened to six innings because of the mercy rule. Rhianna Maynard had a double and a triple and Erin Craig was 2-for-5 with three RBI for the Bears (8-2). Raven Houck was 2-for-3 with a home run for Wheeler (3-3).

    • Shay Sauvageau drove in seven runs as Griswold defeated New London 23-0 in five innings in the ECC Medium Division. Tiffany McPherson and Bria Fielding each singled for the Whalers (2-9, 0-5).

    • No. 10 NFA improved to 9-1 with a 5-1 win over Darien. Beth Fleming tossed a two-hitter and struck out 11 while Kayla Tosses belted a three-run home run to cap a four-run sixth inning for the Wildcats. Sara Cote tripled and Shea Gendron doubled for NFA.

    Boys' tennis

    • Waterford swept the three doubles matches en route to a 6-1 win over Stonington in the ECC Large Division. The teams of Evan Burdsall-Dylon Vitale, Adam Pinch-David Peree and Hugh Mugavero-David Hausmann were victorious for the Lancers (4-2, 3-1) as were singles players Camiren Carter, Mike Gianakos and James Zhu. William Michelson won at No. 4 singles for Stonington (3-2, 2-2).

    • Montville swept the four singles matches to defeat Killingly 4-3 in the ECC Small Division. Mason Whittaker rallied for a three-set win at No. 4 singles for the Indians (2-3, 2-2) while Hunter Stepanian, Rohit Sinha and Giannpierre Aquino each won in straight sets.

    • New London defeated St. Bernard 4-3 receiving singles wins from Bahaa Hoda, Andrew Carlson and Zach Skrabacz. The Whalers improved to 5-2. Kyle Keefe won at No. 4 singles for St. Bernard (2-4).

    Girls' tennis

    • St. Bernard swept the four singles match to edge New London 4-3. Michaela Abate, Wendy Bessette, Marissa Fratoni and Anna McKinley were straight-set winners for St. Bernard (3-3). New London (4-3) swept the doubles behind the teams of Yesha Patel-Olivia Santana, Jalyn Scruggs-Hadyia Robinson and Cora Sawyer-George Ann Amar.

    • Norwich Tech cruised to a 7-0 victory over Bullard-Havens in the CSC. Olivia Kenyon and Hannah Holloway won singles matches without losing a game for the Warriors (6-1, 6-0) while the No. 1 doubles team of Emily Kivela and Phoebe Joyner also won 8-0.

    • Killingly held on to beat Ledyard 4-3 handing the Colonels their first loss in the ECC Small. Olivia Lyon and Cynthis Peterson won singles matches for Ledyard (3-3, 3-1) while the No. 1 doubles team of Stephanie Vetrano and Cara Tran also won.

    H.S. boys' track

    • Jonathan Keth (200 meters, 300 hurdles), Dylan Abate (1,600, javelin) and Rolando Rivera (long jump, triple jump) each won two individual events in Waterford's 85-56 victory over Plainfield on Wednesday. Keth and Rivera joined Connor Chung and Robin Smith to win the 4x100 relay.

    H.S. girls' track

    • Sophia Podeszwa won both hurdles events and Carissa Aekins the 100 and the triple jump in Waterford's 87.5-62.5 victory over Plainfield on Wednesday. Zora LaBonte (200), Rachel Dondero (high jump), Meika Gathy (shot put) and Nevaeh McKinney (discus) also won events for the Lancers.
