Local roundup: No. 1 Stonington girls win Class S tennis opener 7-0

Mystic — Top-seeded Stonington got off to a quick start in the CIAC Class S girls' tennis tournament on Monday, rolling past No. 16 Canton, 7-0, in a first-round match moved indoors to the Mystic Indoor Sports complex.

The Bears (15-0), who reached the Class M semifinals last season before returning to Class S this year, will get a day off while awaiting the winner of Tuesday's match between No. 8 Wolcott and No. 9 Old Saybrook, which was rained out on Monday. That winner will visit Stonington at 3 p.m. Wednesday for a quarterfinal match.

The semifinals and finals have been pushed back to Thursday and Friday, respectively.

"It was nice to get a match in today," Stonington coach George Crouse said. "It gives us a little rest because now we don't have to keep going day after day after day, which can wear the kids down. Maybe playing (Monday) will give us some energy near the end when it's needed."

Stonington didn't lose a set again Canton (14-7) as ECC singles champ Gabby Dellacono won 6-0, 6-0, Charlotte Johnstone won 6-2, 6-2, Mackenzie Sadler won 7-6 (4), 6-0 and Margot Goodman won 6-1, 6-4. ECC doubles champs Claire Morehouse and Phoebe Townsend won 7-6 (5), 6-3 as did Hannah Middletown-Kranchberg and Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz (6-1, 6-1) and Holly Foster and Cassie Onorato (6-0, 6-0).
