    Local roundup: White, Zuczek to meet in Class S boys' tennis semis

    West Hartford — Old Lyme's Brendan White and St. Bernard's Alex Zuczek reached the singles semifinals of the Class S state boys' tennis tournament on Tuesday at Conard High School.

    White, the No. 3 seed, beat No. 14 Daniel Capuano of Old Saybrook 6-2, 7-5 in the third round and eliminated No.6 Oliver Hasson of Northwest Catholic 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Zuczek, the No. 2 seed, knocked off Peter Blank of Old Saybrook 6-0, 6-0 in the third round and No. 7 Eric Weinstein of East Catholic 6-1, 6-0 in the quarters.

    Wednesday's semifinal match (3 p.m.) at Yale University will be rematch of last year's quarterfinal, which Zuczek won in a tie-breaker. It is White's only loss in the last two seasons.

    "Both of them have gotten better, so it will be very interesting," Old Lyme coach John Pfeiffer said.

    Old Lyme's third-seeded doubles team of Ethan Fenton and Austin Pilgrim also made it to the semifinals, defeating Ryan Sealy-Chris Tsang of Stonington 6-0, 6-3 in the third round and No. 6 Jeffrey Riggio-Jason Simoneau of Valley Regional 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterinals. Fenton-Pilgrim will play No. 2 Hunter Stone-Troy Romano of East Catholic in the semis. No. 13 Adam Czarnecki-Charles Dahlke of Old Lyme lost to No. 5 Tejas Patel-Mike Murray of Mrogan 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-5 in the third round.

    In other state tournmanet play:

    • Fitch's doubles team of Chase Brown and Shiloh Feldman, seeded ninth, lost in the Class L third round to No. 5 Noah Gulla and Robert Isreal of Hand.

    • Waterford's Camiren Carter reached the quarterfinals in Class M before losing, as did the Lancers' doubles team of Evan Burdsall and Dylane Vitale. Carter defeated No. 10 Matt Burke of St. Joseph 6-3, 6-3 in the third round and lost to No. 2 Sebastian Casellas of Weston 7-5, 6-2. Burdsall and Vitale, the No. 6 seed, defeated No. 11 Joseph Abraham-Jarrett Sutula of Brookfield 6-0, 6-4 in the third round before losing to No. 3 Eric Benninghoff-Ishan Mirchandani of Weston 6-3, 6-1.

    Benninghoff-Mirchandani also ousted No. 14 Eric Gu-Mark Powers 6-2, 6-1 of East Lyme in the third round, while the Vikings' No. 5 team of Mukesh Kurmumbail-Davon Chen lost to No. 12 Matt Mastropietro-Matt Spina of Wolcott 7-5, 6-3 in the third round. In addition, unseeded Mike Gianakos of Waterford lost to the third round to No. 11 Steven Dampf of Weston 6-4, 6-1.

    Girls' lacrosse

    • No. 7 East Lyme scored 11 goals in the second half to pull away for an 18-7 win over No. 10 North Haven in the Class M first round. Caroline Healy had four goals and an assist for the Vikings (16-3), who visit No. 2 Branford in Thursday's quarterfinals, while Steph deLaforcade scored four goals, Karlie Rowe had two goals and one assist, Elena Hynes had one goal and two assists, Nancy Harrington scored twice and Taya Valdes added two assists.

    • Sloane Sweitzer had five goals and two assists, leading No. 1 Old Lyme to a 16-12 win over No. 16 North Branford in the Class S first round. Old Lyme (18-1) hosts No. 9 Ellington in Thursday's quarterfinals. Sydney Cowell had four goals, Anna Mesham and Olivia Scott each scored twice and Hannah Guenther made nine saves for Old Lyme.

    • Taylor Moore had eight goals and four assists to lead No. 12 Weston to a 15-7 win over No. 5 Waterford in the Class S first round. Julia Gigliotti and Leah Petrini each had to goals for the Lancers, who finish 12-6, while Megan Sturm added one goal and one assist.

    • No. 6 Stonington fell to No. 11 Granby 13-11 in the first round of the Class S tournament. Margit Burgess had five goals, Catherine Cassata scored twice, Hannah Johnson had three goals and an assist and Lexi Bucko made 12 saves for Stonington (12-6). 

    H.S. golf

    • Mike Anderson fired a 44 to earn medalist honors, leading Wheeler past East Lyme, 5.5-1.5, at Old Lyme Country Club. Jake Umphlett (50) and Matt Worobey (45) also won their matches for the Lions. Travis Franco (49) earned a point for the Vikings.

    • Killingly wrapped up the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division title with a 7-0 win over Stonington. John Aitken of Killingly (25-0, 10-0) was the medalist with a 2-under-par 33 at Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam. Killingly won the medal point 139-167. Jack Ognisty led Stonington (15-3, 8-2) with a 38.  

    Local golf

    • Lynn Valentine of East Lyme is tied for second after the first round of the 18th Connecticut Women's Open Championship at Round Hill Club in Greenwich. Valentine fired a 1-over 72 to tie Ashli Bunch of Morristown, Tenn., trailing leader Jessica Carafiello of Stamford by three strokes. Valentine, who won the 2008 Women's Open, played a strong back nine, shooting a 3-under 33. The final round is Wednesday.

    College sailing

    • Coast Guard Academy sits in first place in the Western semifinals after the first day of racing at the Gill Coed Sailing National Championship in San Diego. The Bears scored 49 points to lead 17 other teams, including Georgetown (64) and George Washington (67). Connecticut College is in sixth place with 91 points. The top nine finishers in each of the two divisions after Wednesday's second semifinal regatta advance to the finals.
