    Whalers' D. Major Roman to join his brother at Yale

    New London — New London High School senior D. Major Roman made his college choice Thursday, giving a commitment to attend Yale University, according to his father, Juan, New London's new football coach.

    Roman, who made The Day's All-Area team last season, will become the second member of his family to play for the Bulldogs, joining his brother, J. Hunter Roman, who played at Yale last year.

    Roman, also an All-Area basketball player, is a standout defensive end and tight end for the Whalers.

    Dunn signs rookie contract

    • New London's Kris Dunn signed a rookie deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday, various news outlets reported.

    Dunn, who was selected fifth overall in last month's NBA Draft, will make his debut on Friday night when the Timberwolves plays the Denver Nuggets in Las Vegas Pro Summer League at the Thomas and Mack Center. The game begins at 8:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.

    According to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, the NBA slot for the fifth overall pick is $3.56 million during his rookie season and $3.72 million for his second year. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Dunn will make "almost $3.9 million" this season.

    The 6-foot-4 point begin practicing with the Timberwolves on Tuesday before the team flew to Las Vegas on Thursday.

    • Hunter Sheffield and Alex Tryon each had two hits and scored two runs as Niantic defeated Norwich 11-6 in the first game of a doubleheader. Sam Gonski added a pair of RBI for Niantic (17-3) while Robert Thornburn led Norwich by going 3-for-4 with two RBI, Yamil Dip drove in three runs and Steve Sieczkowski was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

    District 10 baseball (10-11)

    • Waterford defeated Mystic 8-5in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series. Evan Piotrowski, EvanMcCue, Jabez White and Logan Peabody had two hits apiece for Waterford with White and Sean Salvador each doubling. Salvador also earned the save. Joey Basso hit a home run for Mystic while Ethan Mireault and Aiden Whitten each doubled.

    District 10 baseball (9-10)

    • Mystic defeated New London 16-1 in four innings as Jackson LaLima went 2-for-2 with a double and triple. Martin Light had a hit for New London.
