    Local roundup: NFA volleyball beats Waterford in four games

    Norwich — MacKenzie Burke's 26 kills helped Norwich Free Academy beat Waterford 25-13, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-12 in a high school volleyball match on Friday.

    Kayley Ericson had 42 assists and 12 service points, Melody Deschamps tallied 24 service points and Meghan Goldstein recorded 11 kills for the Wildcats (6-1).

    Alaina Moger had 27 assists for the Lancers (4-5) while Olivia Pacheco added three aces, Leah Terrell eight kills and Molly Kosma 10 digs.

    In other matches:

    • Madison Bell recorded 10 digs and Annie Walker contributed 15 assists to help East Lyme defeat Montville, 25-11, 25-12 and 25-13. Kamryn Ebersole added four aces for the Vikings (4-3). Hailey Edwards paced the Indians (3-7) with nine digs. 

    • Raina Haase's 12 kills and three aces led Wheeler to a 25-9, 25-18 and 25-15 sweep over Putnam. Gracie Anglin (seven kills, five aces) and Nikki Collins (three kills, four aces) also helped the Lions (4-5).

    • Whitney Brandt had nine kills and four aces, but Ledyard was beaten by Bacon Academy 25-21, 29-25, 25-13 and 25-21. Miranda Chesnut added four blocks for the Colonels (4-5) while Cynthia Peterson had five kills and two blocks.

    • Killingly rallied to beat Fitch in five games, winning by game scores of 25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-20 and 15-13. Nora Ryan had 23 kills and Sierra Jimenez 10 for the Falcons (5-5) while Caroline Parker finished with 15 digs and Olivia Nordstrom had 31 assists.

    • Grasso Tech fell on the road to Cheney Tech, 25-16, 25-15 and 25-10. Hailey Beal paced the Eagles with two aces, three service points, four kills and three assists.

    H.S. swimming

    • Junior Sophia Podeszwa scored a personal best 200.40 points to win the diving competition, highlighting Waterford's 103-80 win over NFA in the ECC. Elyse Gathy won the 100-meter freestyle (1:07.68) and 100 backstroke (1:15.38) for the Lancers (4-2, 4-2), while Tori Zane captured the 50 free (31.34) and 400 free (5:38.84). Ashley Lac won the 100 breastroke (1:31.43) for NFA (1-6, 1-5).

    • Alyson Lowney won the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.97) and 500 free (5:49.78) to highlight Fitch/Stonington's 100-67 win over Ledyard in the ECC. Skylar Pearse (50 free, 28.28) and Danielle Millerick (100 free, 1:04.30) also won individual events for the Falcons (5-1, 5-1) while Maddie Johanson won the 200 IM (2:29.53) and 100 breaststroke (1:17.81) for Ledyard (2-4, 2-4) and Olivia Strelevitz captured the 100 butterfly (1:03.78) and 100 backstroke (1:05.37).

    College women's soccer

    • Waterford's Claire Hurley scored an unassisted goal in the 36th minute to help Coast Guard Academy earn a 1-1 tie with Smith College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Rachel Boohar had two saves on three shots for the Bears (3-3-4, 0-1-2).

    College field hockey

    • Top-ranked UConn remained unbeaten with a 2-0 Big East victory over Providence. Casey Umstead scored her 10th goal of the season for the Huskies (11-0, 3-0) in the 32nd minute while freshman Svea Boker scored in the second half.

    College volleyball

    • Angelou Dunton had six kills and Michelle McGill recorded a team-high nine digs, but Coast Guard fell to Johnson & Wales, 25-21, 25-13 and 25-4 at the Roger Williams Invitational. The Bears are 7-7.
