    Local roundup: Warriors go the distance, earn spot in Class S volleyball quarters

    Norwich — Norwich Tech won the fifth set 15-9 to earn a 3-2 win over No. 23 Bolton on Wednesday and a trip to the quarterfinals of the CIAC Class S volleyball tournament.

    No. 7 Norwich Tech, the Constitution State Conference tournament champion, plays at No. 2 Coventry at 6 p.m. Friday. Coventry, the defending Class S champion, beat Notre Dame-Fairfield 3-0.

    Madison Bodley had 18 kills and nine digs, Vanessa Gumbs 15 points, seven digs and six kills, Chloe Guzman 14 assists, two digs and a block and Kaitlyn Gifford 12 assists and nine points for Norwich Tech (20-4), which won 11-25, 25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 15-9.

    College wrestling

    • Coast Guard opened its season with a 28-17 win over Southern Maine. Freshman Owen McClave started the match with a pin at 133 pounds and teammate Phil Azzari also pinned. Matthew McAllister, Chris Sullivan, Nick Remke and Daniel Fiorvanti won by decision and A.J. Aeberli won by major decision for the Bears.

    Women's basketball

    • UConn Avery Point lost its NJCAA Region 21 opener, falling to Dean 70-64 on Tuesday. Tatyana LaFrance Boyce had 26 points and four steals, Meagan Bianchi had 16 points and six assists, Kenya Capers had 11 points and nine rebounds and Taleeha Green had 17 rebounds for the Pointers (0-3). 

    College honors

    • The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference announced its all-conference team for women's soccer.

    Stonington graduate Gabi Hoops, a goalie for WPI, was named the conference's defensive player of the year. She helped the Engineers win their first NEWMAC title and earned their first NCAA tournament bid. Her teammate, Lindsay Schneider of East Lyme, made the all-sportsmanship team.

    Coast Guard Academy senior defender Emily Matthews earned second team honors for the first time in her career. Moira Meek represented the Bears on the all-sportsmanship team.

    • Coast Guard's Angelou Dunton was named to the NEWMAC volleyball all-conference second team after leading the Bears in kills (284) and aces (47) while ranking second in digs (208).
