    Local colleges: CGA men pull away from Mitchell in second half

    New London — Coast Guard Academy pulled away in the second half for an 80-68 win over host Mitchell College in a nonleague men's basketball on Wednesday night.

    Justin Kane had 15 points and 14 rebounds for Coast Guard (3-2), Nolan Benson had 10 points and six rebounds, Micah Baldez had 10 points and eight assists, Patrick Witkowski had 18 points — 11 in the second half — and six rebounds and Noah Baldez came off the bench for 13 points.

    Alan Morgan had 14 points and six assists, Domenico Santiago had 13 rebounds and Brayvon Young scored 12 for Mitchell (0-3), which led 39-38 at halftime.

    Women's basketball

    • Payton Ouimette scored 14 points and had eight rebounds, leading Connecticut College to a 65-34 win over Worcester State in a nonleague game. Kylie Caouette and Mairead Hynes had eight points each for Conn (4-1), which outscored Worcester State 49-19 in the second half. Former St. Bernard standout Kaitlyn Berkel had six points for Worcester State (3-3).

    • Smith College outscored Coast Guard 18-4 in the second quarter and went on to a 77-53 win in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Gill Gerton had 10 points and eight rebounds and Jayla Joyner came off the bench for nine points and nine rebounds for Coast Guard (2-3). 

    College honors

    • UConn senior safety Obi Melifonwu was named American Athletic Conference first team while classmate Noel Thomas, a wide receiver, made the second team. Melfonwu led the Huskies in tackles (118) and interceptions (four) and has been selected to play in the Senior Bowl. Thomas set a program single-season record with 100 receptions for 1,179, averaging 8.3 receptions per game (fifth in the nation).

    • Conn College junior defender Livi Block and sophomore forward Alex Baltazar were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-New England Region third team. Block had one goal and one assist, including the game-winner in a win over Colby on Sept. 25. Baltazar had 10 goals and four assists for the Camels, who qualified for the NCAA tournament.

    • Conn College had 43 athletes named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference Fall All-Academic team, including Mark Cameron (men's soccer), Ella Johnson (volleyball), Anna Guay (women's cross country), Amanda Jacobsen (field hockey), Bryn MacGillivray (field hockey), Alex McDevitt (volleyball), Kelsey McGinnis (women's cross country), Amanda Proulx (women's soccer), Raymond Rich-Fiondella (men's cross country) and Natalie Wenigmann (field hockey), who all made the team for the third time.

    Also making the team were (by sport) — Men's cross country: Russell Adam, Ben Bosworth, Zander Mintz, Connor Trapp; Women's cross country: Diana Boyer, Cayla Condon, Ashley Curran, Samantha Morse, Micaela Nee, Steph Van Riet; Field hockey: Cara McConaughey, Enya McGarry, Jamie Navoni, Gabby Peterson, Lauren Pianucci, Kaitlin Thomas; Men's soccer: Pat Devlin, Tyler Hoadley, Graham Koval, James Losito, Ben Manogian; Women's soccer: Alex Baltazar, Livi Block, Alex Bukovac, Caroline Kelleher, Michelle Medina, Nicole Medina, Samantha Miesemer, Katelyn Murray, Lauren Steele; Volleyball: Katie Elisman, Maddie Rust; Men's water polo: Jake Pescatore.

    In addition, Old Lyme's Nicholas Walker, a senior cross country runner at Bowdoin College, was selected for the second time.
