    Local roundup: Merchant Marine men push past Coast Guard from the free throw line

    Kings Point, N.Y. — Merchant Marine Academy earned bragging rights over Coast Guard Academy in the men's basketball rivalry, sinking four free throws in the final 16 seconds to post a 50-47 victory Wednesday.

    Matt Miller's two free throws with 16 seconds remaining pushed Merchant Marine (2-7) in front for good 48-47 and Robbie Kennedy added a pair of foul shots with two seconds left to close out the scoring. Miller finished with a game-high 20 points.

    Coast Guard (3-4) took a one-point lead on Justin Kane's layup at the 58-second mark but the Bears couldn't hold on. Max Lampe came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points and Micah Baldez added nine points, nine rebounds and six assists for Coast Guard.

    In other games: 

    • Tyrei Randall scored a team-best 19 points and Maceo Jack added 17 in an 87-75 loss to South Kent. Ty'jon Gilmore had 12 points for the Chancellors. 

    Women's basketball

    • Coast Guard Academy trailed by nine points at the end of the first quarter and never recovered, losing to Clark 64-52 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. The Bears (2-6, 0-2) shot a season-low 26.6 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers. Gill Gerton led the way with 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists while Coast Guard teammate Micaela Martinelli added a career-high 14 points. Aretha Sullivan had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Clark (5-2, 2-1), which took a commanding lead with a 17-0 run in the second half. 

    Girls' basketball

    • Catherine Shannon and Katia Bourganos each scored seven points for the Williams School in a season-opening loss to Rocky Hill (R.I.), 27-20. Camryn Werbinski added five points for the Blues. 

    Boys' basketball

    • August Williams had eight points in the Williams School's 72-21 loss to Hyde School. Zain Alam and Nick Bonner added six points apiece for the Blues. 

    H.S. rifle

    • Grasso Tech's Zack Stelling fired a 180 out of 200 points to post his team's high score in a season-opening loss to Avon Old Farms, 907-836. Alex Potchniak shot a 169 and Zach Ivory 167 for the Eagles.
