Roger Bidwell named to NJCAA Baseball Hall of Fame

Groton — Roger Bidwell, who guided the UConn-Avery Point baseball program for 34 seasons before retiring in 2015, was named to the NJCAA to the Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2017 by the National Junior College Athletic Association on Thursday.

The class also includes coaches James Hall of Eastern Arizona and Craig Young of Middle Georgia State. The induction ceremony will take place during the 2017 NJCAA Division II World Series, which will be held Mary 27-June 2 in Enid, Okla.

Bidwell, a Ledyard High School and UConn graduate, replaced ex-UConn great George Greer as head coach at Avery Point in 1982 and compiled won over 1,000 games in his storied career, finishing with a career record of 1,007-378-7.

The Pointers won 13 NJCAA Region 21 Division II championships and made six trips to the Division II World Series, including a runner-up finish in 2010 when Avery Point finished 41-10. Prior to joining Region 21, Bidwell led the Pointers to six straight Connecticut Small College Conference championships from 1982-87.

Bidwell, who was presented with a Gold Key Award by the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance in 2011, sent more than 150-players to four-year schools with 34 going on to play professionally, including three made it the majors — East Lyme's John McDonald and Pete Walker, and New London's Rajai Davis. Walker is the current pitching coach with the Toronto Blue Jays and Davis, who played in the World Series last season with the Cleveland Indians, signed a free-agent contract with the Oakland Athletics this season.

Bidwell remains the athletic director at Avery Point.
